We started the session by creating a word cloud 👆🏽 with input from the participants & it was a powerful reminder that carers need care too!

If you’d like to learn more about how to include #UnpaidCarers in your programmes that support mental health, please contact [email protected] 😊

On #WorldMentalHealthDay we’re thinking about #UnpaidCarers - mothers, fathers, siblings & others - who look after their loved ones, often without any recognition or support.

Supporting their #MentalHealth is crucial. Last week, we explored this in our webinar w/ Catalyst Now 💜🧡
A word cloud on a purple background with the Carers Worldwide logo in the top left corner. The cloud visualizes responses to the question, “What do you think of when you hear the phrase ‘unpaid carer’?” Prominent words include “mother”, “family”, “stress”, “invisible”, “dedicated person”, “burnout”, “isolated and vulnerable” and “under acknowledged.” Words are in varying sizes and colours A screenshot of a Zoom meeting with some participants visible in a grid layout. Total participants were 63 which included both men and women

Unpaid family carers are the hidden workforce sustaining our health systems, communities & economies globally.

At #CarersWorldwide we’re reframing unpaid care as essential labour & ensuring unpaid carers get the recognition, respect & support they deserve 💜🧡

So much depends on how we view unpaid care. When it is seen as family duty, we take it for granted & make it invisible. As a result, #UnpaidCarers become invisible too.

Katy Styles, Founder of the We Care Campaign (@wecarecampaign.bsky.social), highlights this in our recent #HumansCare interview.
A purple speech bubble contains a quote that reads: “Until we shift the way society sees caring, not as private family duty but as something with immense social and economic value, we won’t see the investment, rights, or recognition carers deserve. A global change in attitude is the foundation for everything else.” - Katy Styles, Founder, We Care Campaign; A photo of a short-haired woman holding a cup is shown in a circular frame at the bottom right and the Carers Worldwide logo appears in the top left corner

💬 "The stories were so impactful, we all had tears in our eyes. I love how these photos show love of people and their dignity."

Read Rina's her story on our blog 👇🏽 It is a reminder that far from being 'pointless', caring is skilled work that is both essential and life-affirming, and that unpaid family carers deserve recognition and respect.

#HumansCare | Finding Hope Through Community, Rina’s story
Rina lives on the outskirts of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and cares for her niece, Anu, who has an intellectual disability.

When society dehumanises people with care needs, it also undervalues the #UnpaidCarers who support them.

Rina knows this struggle all too well. Left alone to raise her niece Anu, who has an intellectual disability, she faced isolation & judgement. Fear kept her from even stepping outside with Anu.

Sadly, we sometimes hear from unpaid carers we support, that they face ridicule from their communities and even get told that their work caring for a loved one is 'pointless' 💔 This stigma can stem from lack of awareness and understanding, and limited access to education and healthcare.

This makes one thing clear: commitments alone aren’t enough. Global leaders must ensure that they translate into action.

People living with mental health conditions and their #UnpaidCarers, especially in LMICs deserve real, tangible support!

We surveyed 502 unpaid carers of people with a range of mostly severe mental health conditions.

Despite challenges around health, finances & lack of support, most of them are proud of their role & feel valued by their loved ones 💜🧡
