We love open source! So, we decided to open-source the GameMaker libraries we use in production at Distant Illusions.

- wFSM for state machines
- wTimer for scheduling function executions
- wRNG for seeded randomization
- wEase for animation curves

Try them out here: distantillusions.itch.io/digm

It's that time of the month again! No not that one. Gross, dude. Anyway, the newsletter is here again, in this deep dark month of not quite winter.

This long in, it's hard to single out a page for great work. I've seen several of them grow out from a scant paragraph to a massive sprawling research project by one or more reverse-engineers with nothing better to do.

That being said, I love this image (which happens to be featured today)

I think I've been entirely wrong about what makes for good TV. I always thought shows needed more longform story arcs (because that's what I liked in anime), but now that I've watched more shows, the ideal form is still focusing on singular episodes.

Today I'm playing Urban Reign! An underloved, tough as nails PS2 beat-em-up which beat-me-down, over and over again. And it's amazing. Join Brad Hawk on the hardest 100 fights of his life to save a city he doesn't seem all that invested in.

Games development was meant to be a lonely job. Trust us, you should isolate yourself and turn a fun thing into work. Reddit says so. We all love Reddit. We all love Reddit. We all love Reddit.

Hey it works!!! I'm sure of it! This subreddit that has 100 000 developers on it had one post about a guy who made it, therefore it's definitely the right course of action! What do you mean survivorsh...

One of these days I'll make a doom source port, but it'll be one of those unholy abominations that make it look like doom 3 with dynamic lighting, 3D models and specular highlights on every surface. This is because I want you to feel pain

Oh my god!! Gamedev is a oddly lonely job since it's mostly just numbers on a page, but getting a single person to talk about playing something you made always means the world.

The link got a little lost in the shuffle (thanks one embed per post (watch the rest too))

Fuck it, I'll start a thread talking about albums I've listened to thoughout the day. Starting with Supergrass's Road to Rouen.

Tales of Endurance is one of the best songs ever committed to CD. The ending of the album is a little weak compared to the start but it's still a good listen overall.

People keep asking us how to get started making games. Instead of giving a one-on-one lessons to each person who asks, we decided to write down our secrets.

Man am I glad to see this game actually got out. A weeklong game jam is definitely a bit weird to work on, ludum dares are a little more palitable but with the menus taking so long at the end, a shorter gamejam would've lead to this game getting jammed at the end of development god this is a bad pos

Cascadence, the game I made with @catonator.net, is out now on itch!

Arrange falling blocks into 2x2 squares to clear them from the board. Play solo through 10 unique levels, or go head-to-head with CPU opponents in some fast-paced block battles! #FallingBlockJam
