(5/5) We warmly welcome the Minister’s commitment to work with people with lived experience and other stakeholders to do this.

(4/5) The government must ensure that this community support is developed in a timely manner, so that children, young people and adults with learning disabilities or who are autistic have the right to live in their local communities upheld.

(3/5) Powerful campaigning from people with learning disabilities, autistic people, families and charities has got us to this point and now people’s voices are needed more than ever.

The recent LeDeR report showed that Learning Disability Nurses help to tackle the unacceptable health inequalities that people with learning disabilities continue to face.
But their numbers have fallen significantly over the last 15 years, and the university courses that train them are closing.

(2/3) "When families ask for support, that is exactly what they should get. We urge the government to take forward these proposals and ensure that the experiences of children with severe learning disabilities and the voices of family carers continue to be heard as reforms are implemented."

(7/9) The Government must work with people with learning disabilities, families and other stakeholders to identify and take concerted action to address the barriers to good health care.

(6/9) The 10 Year Health Plan, published by the Government earlier this year, acknowledged the healthcare inequalities and poorer life expectancies that people with learning disabilities face.

(5/9) The report also found ethnic disparities; people from non-white backgrounds died at younger ages and avoidable deaths were higher.
cbfdn.bsky.social
(4/9) 1 in 4 deaths of people with severe or profound and multiple learning disabilities were treatable – had better care and coordination been available, they would not have died.
cbfdn.bsky.social
(3/9) Of the people whose lives and deaths were looked at by LeDeR, 38.8% of deaths of people with a learning disability in 2023 could have been avoided.

(2/9) The report provides us with data, but every number represents a person- a son, daughter, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, a friend - a member of a family who was loved. Too many people died prematurely when they should have had longer lives.
