This study emphasizes the importance of efforts to support girls’ sense of belonging in mathematics, especially into secondary grades in which reported levels of math anxiety are higher.
cbhornburg.bsky.social
Girls showed higher levels of math anxiety than boys, and math anxiety increased across grades. However, math anxiety was unrelated to the content of students’ drawings.
cbhornburg.bsky.social
We had a sample of 4th, 6th, and 8th graders. Girls drew more female mathematicians than boys, and the proportion of students drawing female mathematicians dropped steeply in eighth grade, particularly for girls.

FYI: The Spencer Foundation, Kapor Foundation, The William T. Grant Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation have collaborated to offer $25K rapid response grants.

"This rapid response bridge funding opportunity is for scholars and teams whose grants have recently been cancelled by NSF."

Other suggestions regarding measuring children's persistence in a way that is playful / game-like (not too frustrating) would be welcome too!
cbhornburg.bsky.social
Asking the crowd: Who has used a LEGO construction task to measure children's persistence, and could you share your protocol and/or published articles using the task? I have a student considering using this sort of measure with 1st and 4th graders. #PsychSciSky

Math language predicted most numeracy skills! (e.g., set comparison, numeral comparison, numeral identification). Of the emergent literacy skills, only print knowledge was a significant predictor of some numeracy skills (verbal counting, number order, and story problems).
cbhornburg.bsky.social
We examined longitudinal relations among math language, emergent literacy skills (print knowledge, phonological awareness, and general vocabulary) and specific early numeracy skills.
