Surprised to see a Red-winged Blackbird at the feeder yesterday. Must be on its way south. Not 100% sure if this is a bold marked female or a male with no hint of shoulder patches (faded when non-beeding)

While normally people look for the brilliant red shoulder patch on a RW Blackbird, both the female and non-breeding plumage on the male is quite different. Nevertheless the patterns on this bird is quite striking, bold in its own way.

Goldfinch lose their colour in the fall. This goldfinch is sitting on top of a dead flower and chewing on a light coloured seed. Echinacea flower turns into a spiky globe as they go to seed.
