Today is the feast day of Saint Catherine of Alexandria and for years, French-Canadians have celebrated the day by making St. Catherine's Taffy.
While it is not as common as a treat today, it is still something enjoyed by many during the holiday season.
This is the story.

Colleen Jones has died.
One of the greatest curlers in Canadian history, she appeared at the Scotties 21 times, winning six championships. She also won two World Championships. Jones was also a broadcaster on CBC for four decades before she retired.

On this day in 1885, Banff National Park was established as Rocky Mountains Park.
Upon its creation, it was only 26 sq-km but has since expanded to 6,641 sq-km.
It was Canada's first National Park and North America's third.
Each year, 4.1 million people visit the park.

On this day in 1902, Eddie Shore was born in Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan.
One of the greatest players in NHL history, he won four Harts and two Stanley Cups in his Hall of Fame career.

On this day in 2023, Marty Krofft died.
Born in Montreal in 1937, he and his brother Sid created several children's shows including Land of the Lost, H.R. Pufnstuf and Sigmund and the Sea Monsters. The shows were known for their high-concept plots and large-headed puppets.

On this day in 1915, Tommy Prince was born. One of Canada's greatest soldiers, he was one of only three Canadians to receive the Military Medal and American Silver Star during the Second World War.

On this day in 1974, Kenneth Mitchell was born in Toronto.
He rose to fame as Eric Green on Jericho and Ralph Cox in Miracle. He played several characters on Star Trek: Discovery. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2020. He died four years later.

On this day in 1976, The Band performed their final concert. Called The Last Waltz, it featured many guest performers and was turned into a critically-acclaimed documentary directed by Martin Scorsese. The album produced from the concert reached the top 20 in 11 countries.

Her breakout role was Claire Kincaid in Law & Order, followed by the title role as Jordan Cavanaugh in Crossing Jordan. She has also released two albums. She also has a star on Canada's Walk of Fame.

On Oct. 27, 1854, Canada experienced its first major train wreck when a passenger train collided with a gravel train near present-day Chatham-Kent, Ontario.
The accident killed 52 people and was, at the time, North America's worst rail disaster.
