A reminder from the United Nations on this International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies www.un.org/en/observanc...

CSA is calling for Oz to develop a national health & clean air strategy. With > 3000 deaths and many more suffering air pollution related illnesses each year, we have a lot to gain.
Register now for our September webinar, 'Traffic, cars and air' Presented by Dr Nicolás Borchers Arriagada –University of Tasmania & Jason Smith – Program Director, Real World Testing, Australian Automobile Association utas.zoom.us/webinar/regi...
Professor Fay Johnston said Centre for Safe Air research showed "traffic pollution is the single-most important source of air pollution".

"If we're wanting to reduce chronic heart disease and illness and deaths, traffic pollution is a good place to look."

Car pollution is deadly. New research shows us just how much
Vehicle emissions may contribute to more than 1,800 premature deaths in Australia each year, according to the nation's first assessment of the health impact of traffic-related pollution.

“When people think of pollution they often picture smokestacks, vehicle exhaust and coal-fired power stations, but wood heaters pollute more fine particulate matter into the air we breathe than any of these sources,” said Professor Fay Johnston. #airquality #cleanair #electrification
A burning issue: why it’s time to ditch the wood-fired heater and opt for eco alternatives
Wood burning is one of the biggest sources of fine particulate pollution in Australia. Here are ways to reduce emissions and improve your health

Australian wood heater standards do not reflect how much air pollution they produce.

As a result, Dr John Todd said, new wood heaters were up to 10 times more polluting than the standards suggested.

Why Australia hasn't adopted NZ's solution to wood smoke pollution
A new generation of low-emission wood heaters that produce a fraction of the particulate pollution of current models could save lives by improving air quality, researchers say.

FireLab3 combines three crucial research capabilities:

🔥 🌿 A flammability lab to conducting assessments of plant flammability,

🔥 🪵 A bioenergy lab to test domestic wood heater emissions, and

💨 😷 an exposure lab to simulate controlled smoke and temperature exposures
The Centre for Safe Air was delighted to launch FireLab3, a globally-significant research facility for the study of bushfires, plant flammability, smoke emissions, air pollution and human health at the University of Tasmania.

🚨 New research from the Centre for Safe Air reveals wood heater smoke causes more deaths than car pollution in Australia—729 lives lost yearly. A national map shows where the risk is highest. #AirPollution #PublicHealth #SafeAir
Wood heater smoke is a silent killer but one city tops the list
Wood heaters are estimated to be responsible for more pollution-related deaths than all the cars on our roads. This national map shows which areas are affected the most.

The Healthy Air Healthy Lives Study is being led by researchers at the University of Melbourne to develop communication materials.
We are asking you to contribute to (1) a 60-minute focus group discussion with other health care providers, either in-person or online, to share your perspectives; and (2) a 120-minute follow-up discussion 3-4 months later to provide your feedback on the development of health information.
🌸🍄We know that health care providers and educators are crucial in supporting people experiencing respiratory health issues, but we’re not sure what your information needs are in relation to the role of pollen and fungi on health.
✉️☎️To register your interest in this study and find out more, please contact Dr Sabrina Idrose or Dr Rachel Tham ([email protected]) or phone (03) 9035 6074.
Your participation will help us understand your perspectives, current knowledge (and gaps) and future knowledge needs on the role of pollen and fungi on health, especially on susceptible people.
👩‍⚕️🩺Are you a doctor, nurse, pharmacist or asthma educator? We are looking for health professionals like you to participate in our Healthy Air Healthy Lives Study.
