Let's not discount the use of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission as an alternative. They were very useful in Rwanda and South Africa, and it doesn't exclude the possibility of imprisonment.

Yes and If you were ever taught the Civil War was about state's rights in any capacity, you have been affected by their propaganda.

One of the most effective propaganda groups in US history.

To put it bluntly. If the North promised to enforce the fugitive slave act in perpetuity and guaranteed they would never abolish slavery; they still would have seceded. That is how important the issue of the expansion of slavery was.

Then, by your logic, all of the northern states that voted for it wanted to be slave states? Because that is how the delegations of NY, PA, VT, MA, etc. all voted for it.

No one is arguing the South didnt want the FSA. I am saying the most important issue was expansion and it's supported by facts

The South told us exactly why the conceded, the attempted compromises tell us the issues that were the most important. Specifically the last ditch Crittenden Compromise.

Only one state mentioned that as a reason for secession. The expansion of slavery was mentioned in all of them. The main reason does not mean the only reason.

It is important to remember history as it happened not as what suits our current events

The reason they would not be content on being left alone is the prevailing thought was that if slavery could not expand a slave riot, like what happened in Haiti was inevitable.

That's not what the South was wanting nor arguing for in compromise attempts. They seceeded because they felt that with the election of Lincoln, no new territories or states would have slavery. The expansion of slavery was the most important issue of the decades leading up to secession.

It was a tactical slogan to rebrand the Confederacy during reconstruction.

The South did not invoke and explicitly was against state's rights before the Civil War.

I fully believe Johnson is delaying the swearing in because he doesnt want the vote, but it would be one too far to think that is why they are shutting down the government.

Comey's one saving grace, for me, was how he handled the Gonzales and Ashcroft scandal but maybe I have a misunderstanding of the facts or there is something I am missing that caused your disdain before that or until 2013.
