Wrong Turn 3 is a thought-provoking and hauntingly beautiful meditation on crime, punishment, and repressed homosexuality. It forces us to ask: do three wrong turns make a right?

I got rid of Gmail when Google rolled back all their civil rights / DEI efforts and reading this below makes me even happier I did. You can do it too.
If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

If you are thinking about holiday gifts for folx and want to give a little something for them to look forward to a few months down the road, pre-order "Unlocking Justice" for them! It's a nerdy-yet-extremely-accessible book that I wrote to be engaging and optimistic. www.amazon.com/Unlocking-Ju...

Getting ready to submit this paper to a new journal... this is the one that AERA Open desk rejected in part because "At present, the writing comes across as somewhat too direct."

Horrified to discover that there is now priority seating for me at the coffee shop. F*** this timeline.

“Wrong Turn 2 is an Oscar-worthy cinematic masterpiece” is the hill I will die on. Just like so many cannibalistic hicks in that movie.

Data for Justice class today: demoing basic NLP + topic modeling using the 2017 UN General Debate speeches. After cleaning the text and fitting a simple topic model, we end up with this map of which issues different countries emphasize most. Such a cool example to teach. DM me if you want code.

Piper explains why I don't do grades.
If life is so hard and complicated that nobody knows what the fuck they're doing they should have just said that instead of giving us grade point averages.

Constant tension between allocating my efforts to mitigating the broad harms impacting groups in our society and the very proximate harms impacting my students. Not enough hours in the day and I am not a philosopher.

Need help re. Epstein emails. I am confused about resources available. I can find online explorers of the .pdf files but is there just a clean repo of text data out there?? @paulgp.com etc?
November 17, 2025 at 9:42 AM
Am I going to use the Epstein emails as my in-class example for various NLP techniques with my Data for Justice students this week?

Yes. Yes I am.
