I am forever confused by the contortions some 'progressives' go through to end up supporting the most counterintuitive choices and the most reprehensible of allies.

Your enemy's enemy is not a friend - unless one is a total opportunist.

Any movement rooted in ethnonationalist hate is no friend of freedom or social justice.

It is a tyranny in waiting.

Dissent without violence, disagreement without harassment is what a university should be.

Yet there are those who don't accord the same generosity of engagement to those they disagree with.

Instead they send threats. In so doing revealing the hypocrisy of their claimed cause.

Ubc must ensure that students encamped on campus be accorded rights of assembly and not disciplined via principles of property and trespass. Occupation, sit-in, landback, all have histories in student activism and need be respected . #UBC

United by their hate of others, ethnonationalists are the biggest threat to democracy, human rights, and equality.

2. In the light of Proctorio's torch-the-earth legal tactics as an example, university boards should examine whether their procurement policies require contracted providers follow ethical standards in conducting business that align with the high standards universities are expected to meet.

A lot of back slappery and self congratulatory words among admins while at the same time dissing those who don't see the light is such an empty performance.

When admins use these words they think they are being precise, but they mystify and fetishize instead.

University as brand.

...

For all those who wax on about 'the brand' -you realize ints burned into your backside with a red hot iron?

Growing up on the deck of a fish boat taught me to work when the fish run, rest when the fish sleep. There is freedom in this way of life that the tedium of 9-5 can never match.

I'm glad @ubyssey.ca has some reporting on this. Unfortunately, the article repeats a lot of the university's budgetary euphemisms. Units in the Faculty of Arts are being crushed by devastating budget cuts (called "savings targets" by the administration). Cuts affect student services and jobs.

Details on the effect of UBC leadership's folly in which they ignored all advice to the contrary and went bullish on international student recruitment.
