A parasite lives in Ofrey Weiss. The good news: It hardens his skin and muscles in proportion to his fear. The bad: He’s got to stay scared or the creature will eat his organs. Having superpowers is fun, but as Ofrey’s body deteriorates, he must find new ways to terrify himself. Bathe in roaches, run naked through the streets of Tel Aviv, get arrested. Yet, every day he grows less frightened. The warlock who infected Ofrey will neutralize the parasite but only if he marries his daughter and joins a cult. No big deal, just abandon his family, trade his yamaka for goat horns, and act straight. But then Ofrey learns it’s possible for the creature to OD on adrenaline. All it will take is a sustained level of unimaginable terror. The good (and bad) news: Ofrey is surrounded by countries willing to torture the gay out of him. FEAROICS is a YA fantasy with a multi-queer cast that explores racism (Jews vs Arabs) and homophobia (Jews vs Ofrey.) I wrote this long before recent events, but it feels heartbreakingly relevant now. I spent years pouring myself into this book. It means everything to me. I believe anyone who reads it will know more about me than any of my therapists. That's one of the reasons I had to use a pseudonym to publish this. Because of where and in what religion I grew up, I can't reveal my true identity without it causing major problems. I hope it can help someone who is stuck between cherished religion/culture and their sexual orientation. It's not an easy place to be. And sometimes, just having company helps.
