🚨 New mapping by @theguardian.com, @watershed-i.bsky.social, and @investigate-europe.eu has revealed thousands of landfill sites across the UK that may be leaching toxic pollution.

🗑️ 22,000 UK sites predate pollution control regulations, such as linings to prevent leaching.
December 4, 2025 at 3:01 PM
Reposted by CHEM Trust
Because they were created before we had environmental rules, many older landfills have no lining, they don't have filtration systems for rainwater runoff, + there were no restrictions on what could go into them - think of lead acid batteries, old flypaper treated with arsenic, PFOA on old pans.
By compiling FOI data, government records and public sources, we located over 60,000 landfill and waste sites across Europe. Most were likely created before modern environmental regulations.

💻 CHEM Trust has published a new blog and briefing on national #PFAS action across Europe.

🐌 EU action on PFAS has been slow, so Member States have been taking matters into their own hands to protect their citizens.

🇪🇺 Now it’s the EU’s turn to act!

🚨 After 13 years of the evaluation moving at a snail’s pace, the @ec.europa.eu has requested that @echa.europa.eu draft a restriction proposal on DBDPE.

⚠️ Two other aromatic brominated #flameretardants are also in the proposal request.

🧪 PFAS are a group of over 10,000 persistent chemicals, nicknamed the forever chemicals because they hardly degrade in the environment. PFAS are used in many products, and have been found in drinking water.

💪 Strong national action on #PFAS drives real change.

‼️ However, so far, national bans mainly target consumer products.

📈 They do not address industrial uses of PFAS, which are a major source of emissions.

🛍️ #BlackFriday Tip 4:

✅ Avoid handling receipts where possible.

⚠️ Receipts can contain harmful chemicals – instead, opt for email receipts, don’t store receipts in purses or wallets, and don’t give them to children to hold.
