You really should - with cream cheese* on toast, it's the breakfast of champions. It's the one thing I make that my partner wouldn't be without, although she might find this one a bit spicy.

*Mild goat cheese is the professional choice, if you like that kind of thing.

True! I'll prep another bowl for the trick-or-treaters...

Those are beauties! More spider monkey than scorpion :)

A mixed bunch of Buena Mulata, prepped to make a pretty spicy chilli achar. Not sure how it's going to work out, but my usual green chilli stock hasn't done well enough to make a jar's worth.🌶️🌱
Purple, orange and red slices of Buena Mulata chilli pepper, looking radiant on a drab day on an outdoor table beneath an overhung sky.

Hi there! Thanks for responding. I've got a very small feed, and, because the word chilli and the chilli emoji provoked about 100:1 false positive, I narrowed the criteria down to variants of "🌶️🌱". But most posts don't get picked up. Here's one I did as a test:

I took a good haul off this Buena Mulata the other day, but it still looks crazy as a Christmas tree. Quite a small plant, despite the 20 litre pot, making it a clear winner in the harvest:plant-size contest.🌶️🌱
A Buena Mulata chilli plant, festooned with at least 3 dozen peppers, ranging in colour from bright purple, through shades of peachy orange, and eventually to red (actually might have picked all the reddest ones).

Apologies to all for the state of 'Hot Peppers' feed. Now that they've gone all premium I've been trying to transfer to @graze.social . But @graze.social doesn't pick up all the posts either, so I'm a bit stuck. Anyone got any ideas? 🌶️🌱
chillichirps.bsky.social
Absolutely. I've got this and another outdoors, and that's not far behind. Almost more peppers than leaves. Surpassed all expectations!

They really are. Would recommend...

Colour range of ripening Buena Mulata chillies, unripe nearest, ripe farthest. 🌶️🌱
11 buena mulata hot peppers, lined up on a bench. The nearest is unripe, and a bright violet in colour. The colours then graduate through pale violet, peach, orange, dark red and finally, the fully ripe one at the far end is pure red.

Slow reply, because there's still a bit of green on the flip side, so I've been giving it a couple of days to ripen. I picked it because a) I've waited ages already and b) there's a bunch more green ones I'm hoping the plant can put some energy into.

Hoping to have a flavour answer tomorrow!

You're probably right: mine was outside (UK), and only set fruit when the early summer heatwaves stopped. Which could be coincidence, but I've previously had other pubescens (mini olive) which I had to take out of the greenhouse because they struggled with the heat.

Fluke for me too, but not such a good one!

Q:Which fictional classic medieval hero was most effective at weeding?
A: Ivanhoe

There are several reasons I'm expecting this to be very hot.
1. It's fairly hot, up to 100,000 SHU
2. There's a lot of it: cut it open, and the inside looks more like a tomato than a pepper.
3. C. pubescens have a higher proportion of dihydrocapsaicin, which has (imo) a fuller mouthfeel

At last, my first Rocoto!

They were a total no-show last year, yet this year's plant is laden.

Very late, but being so big and fleshy they take a while to ripen. This one, the size of a generous tomato, weighs 50g, whereas the big Fatalii I posted earlier weighed only 5 👀

#pubescens 🌶️🌱
A ripe red rocoto pepper, held between thumb and forefinger - about the size of a good tomato. Rocotos are a variety of Capsicum pubescens, and as such have black seeds and extremely thick flesh - while most peppers have a lot of air inside, these have a lot of pepper inside. As a consequence, this one weighs 50g, while your average habanero might be a tenth of that.

Oops forgot my tags - 🌶️🌱 - then again, I can just add it to the feed. I'd have to anyway, since the auto-add doesn't work now unless you pay 'em.

Keep using the tags though, it gives me something to search for so I can add them manually 😊

Fatalii at sunset.

These are beautiful looking peppers, and tasty, but like all my chinense this year, they're coming through too slowly to make a single variety sauce. They'll add to the mix though, and I'll try for more next year

I need to make this. Haven't had a bread coma all week!

Looks a bit like this one, though that's not much help since I don't know what this one is 🤷

Mystery chilli #2 is now ripe - any ideas? It's extremely hot and very gnarly, with a more matte, peachy red appearance than the camera suggests. 🔥🌱🌶️
A mystery chilli, C. chinense, hanging on the plant. It has a contorted shape, creased and twisted with a pointy tail. The skin is rough and bumpy, with a matte appearance, and a shade somewhere between pale orange and brick red (though the photo makes it look bright orange). Strangely enough, I don't think it's an actual word. Knobbiness seems to be the word, but it didn't feel quite right, so I stuck with the 'L' version. I mean, language can evolve, right?

So you did! These are off a small, neglected plant I gifted a fellow community gardener and re-adopted in their absence, so there's not many on it. My bigger, main plant only has weird little stubby fruits, so I'm wondering if it's a cross or there's still some instability.

These fruity volcanoes really look the part in all their red hot knobbliness. 🌶️🌱

This 7-Pot Brain Strain came with a notable amount of liquid pain pooled inside.

I've put it in the freezer for now, where it can't do any damage, but sooner or later I'm going to have to deal with it properly. 🌶️🌱
