I have a little folder of starred articles in my NetNewsWire feed reader that contain links to pieces that deserve a little more thoughtfulness and which I haven't had time to dive into. Here are a bunch from the last month or so. Maybe you could read one or two of them and share your thoughts here. I'll get to these eventually.

Feeling the season of transitions and thresholds
Georges Island, in Halifax harbour, at the threshold of the Atlantic Ocean and historically a place of transition for prisoners of war and displaced Acadians. I'm coming to the end of my year, and all my travel is finished. I have a few small paying gigs left this month, all of which are online. My autumn has been much busier than usual, with much more travel and in person hosting that has been the practice.

One of the things that has been interesting about this Whitecaps playoff run is how the media has been so obsessed with calling them “Canada’s Team”.

I love my friends who are Whitecaps supporters and my biggest wish for them is that they end the season with the most air miles ever acquired by MLS supporters.

Canada’s new weather alert system
Canada has a new weather alert system and I'm writing this blog post because I know I'm going to need to share it with folks in the future. The systems categorizes weather events based on the above matrix, which represents an intersection of the forecasted impact of the event and the confidence of the forecast. I like the simplicity of the colour coding, because that gets my attention and will always cause me to read more in the forecast description.

The last three games played by Vancouver’s professional soccer teams have been absolutely bonkers.

What a weird atmosphere in Vancouver. There are three teams playing. Whitecaps, LAFC and South Korea.

Cultural body snatching
I’ve had many conversations lately with friends and colleagues about the long term cost of isolation that is exacerbated by the ease of online connection. But, as folks who know my complexity work will know, connections and exchanges are two different things. I can engage in all kinds of people and bits and digital entities now. But why then are we more lonely than ever before?

Haven’t followed the PWHL until now but as a sports fan I actually appreciate a short season where every game matters. 30 games is about right. The NHL is too long and MLB is exhausting. Our League 1 season is just a touch too short at 14 games.

I’m so sorry for Valour FC folding. Obviously they were part of probably the biggest sporting moment of my life in 2023. We’ve been rivals since then.

But it absolutely sucks for supporters to lose their club. It sucks for players and other workers to lose their jobs.

This is what our inlet looks like these days. Grey, wet, cold, and lovely. Fridays are for me. Since I turned 55 a couple of years ago, I've set aside Fridays for - whatever. Since my ADHD diagnosis last year, I've called Friday my ADHD day where I can just let my mind carry me into an unplanned day. Sometimes that means reading, sometimes it means spending the day outside, doing errands, seeing friends, playing music...lots of options.

Local Bowen Island businesses tucking into dialogue on the circular economy last night. Almost through a really busy month of travel and work which has been punctuated by some local volunteer work here on Bowen Island. It's always a tricky thing, to work as a facilitator in one's own home town, but I think it's important to do especially as I spend a lot of time coaching and supporting others to do so.

It has been nine hours and Bluesky’s silence on this matter is incredibly validating.
