Here's a #HigherEducationPostcard of @ucl.ac.uk - some time before it was finished

Founded in 1826 as London University, it became UCL as part of the compromise that enabled it and King's College to award degrees

An old monochrome picture postcard showing University College London, seen through the gates on Gower Street. The nearby wings are not yet complete, the iconic classical portico can be seen in full glory

Genuinely exciting development. Took kids to see Bayeaux Tapestry a few years back on a holiday in northern France. They moaned endlessly we were going to a boring museum but ended up totally captivated, as was I.

Enjoying my time back in London. At National Gallery this morning for exhibition of Mexican artist José Maria Velasco (have a thing for Mexico, a wonderful country). Incredible I could also wander about and see Turners, Cézannes and Monets. I may have taken it a bit for granted when I live here!

Stunning day in Ōtepoti Dunedin. At Aramoana beach earlier. Saw a bunch of hoiho (yellow eyed penguins) mucking about in the surf and a couple of Royal Albatross gliding across the harbour mouth. Feeling the love for this special corner of NZ 🤩.

I came the other way recently. A lot in this piece is true, but NZ is still a superb place to live. UK great but I could equally write something about creaking infrastructure, failing public services, pollution, expensive, busy etc. I definitely could not have lifestyle I have now in UK.

New NZ Science Council and Chief Science Advisor named. There's been a real vacuum in this space so feels like an opportunity to inject some longer term and strategic thinking on NZ's science and innovation.

NZ tracks far below the OECD average when it comes to investing in research and science and attempts to catch up just haven't worked.
