Still trying to figure out managing both Bluesky and Mastodon. Social Network proliferation is icky.

I've finally found a worse date of birth UI picker element than the scrolling year input:

A scrolling year input that lets you pick years decades into the future!

"additional" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

no more perfect ending for a man who, at the end of his life, was certainly not nice.
Scott Adams dying at 68 rather than 69 is the perfect capstone to a life of being almost β€” but not quite β€” funny

quick someone tell Qantas they're doing the right thing for once

It certainly is if you ignore attempts to be regulated

Ah, you mean the commercial aviation industry doesn't do a good job with short-term changes in consumer demand?!?

Re: Lufthansa and Starlink: "we have just signed up our entire airline group to the satellite internet run by the guy who brought you hits like 'Nazi salutes', 'Rhodesia was right' and 'non-consensual intimate image manipulation abuse, including of children'" is certainly quite the move.
January 13, 2026 at 3:22 PM
that would be in line with everything else the tech industry sells, especially given there's hardware lock-in on either side of the transaction (aircraft hardware on the airline side; satellites launched to satisfy demand on the telco side)

Man, if I stumble into making tens of millions of dollars I hope I have the good sense to shut the fuck up and build a bunch of libraries and fund food banks so when I check out peoples first response isn’t β€œSo, that asshole’s done.”

The bar. It is SO LOW.

(a) hooray that microplastics aren't as concerning as we'd assumed
(b) oh no, this is going to set back anti-pollution work by 15 years

As much as I'll say publically: the PSF is a 501(c)(3), and therefore cannot give commercial consideration to a donor.

There are lots of reasons to compare what is happening now to Nazi Germany and there are also lots of reasons to compare what is happening now to the post-1850 Fugitive Slave Act U.S. and it's *weird* how people respond with interest to the former but total confusion to the latter

okay since it appears i have to spell this out even more: β€œtraining” β€” a thing that sounds good to sensible moderate voters, who exist and are uncomfortable with sudden change β€” can, if we make it, be a stalking horse for β€œmoves that effective neuter the agency”

maybe an unpopular position on this website but i think the moderate dem focus on ICE training can be, with political pressure, the pathway to more fundamental reforms. rhetorically it is not too hard to move from β€œmore training” to β€œturns out they’re untrainable and we have to start all over.”

I have sent this episode specifically to a few people unfamiliar with the podcast with the note that it's almost totally unrepresentative of the rest of the series but also a skeleton key to much of 20th century culture and politics.
Today we’re looking back at Episode 165: β€˜Dark Star’ by the Grateful Dead.

Cocking in at 4.5 hours long, Andrew delves into the career of the American rock band - but also the historical and cultural context.
