A major thing about this trilogy: there's a five-year time skip between books 1 and 2. And yes, the scar is explained in book 1 ;)

It's one of the weapons he inherited from his father, so yes, but also, there are no big story implications from it. His fighting style allows him to materialize and dematerialize weapons from magick, and he also uses a sword, bow/arrow, and a chained scythe!

On the eastern side of Avalon, across the vast desert of Sahara, lives one of the most feared of the beast tribes — the hulking elephunk. Towering to the size of an average house, the elephunks live in large groups near caves and mountains, often in close proximity to their natural rivals, the rynocs.
Boasting no natural predators and an intelligence equal to most men, the elephunk remains a high-risk threat to any would-be adventurers of East Avalon. While the Empire has no goals of entering diplomatic negotiations with the beasts, it is unlikely they would agree to anything less than all inhabitants of Avalon subjugating themselves to their rule. With no end in sight for their constant need for conflict, all adventurers of Avalon are advised to avoid these beasts.

A remnant of a long-forgotten era, the blemmyes are one of Avalon’s strangest tribes. Standing at an imposing three meters tall, they are among the strangest of Avalon’s beast tribes. Their appearance is highly unsettling to the everyday adventurer, with a face that sits squarely on the chest, eyes aligned with the shoulders, and great, gaping mouths in the abdomen. These bizarre traits, unchanged for centuries, speak to a lineage untouched and left behind by the refinements of time.
While the blemmyes have been around for hundreds of years, much of their older history was lost after the great flood that wiped out 90% of their territory and species. Before the flood, they inhabited the vast deserts that once connected the Egyptian islands to Lemuria and Sahara.
Now, the dwindling population of blemmyes can often be found at war with humans, goblins, elephunks, and rynocs, since they’ve spread themselves over the entire continent—often at odds with the goblins more than any other, since most of their territory is ideal for the blemmyes. The blemmyes, unfortunately, lack the intelligence that the other beast tribes have evolved to possess. Communication is reduced to crude screams and roars, often misunderstood even among themselves.

Even though they’re powerful, rynocs are usually docile until provoked and will avoid crossing paths with other beast tribes and humans. Unlike their neighbors, the rynocs attempt to remain neutral unless threatened; some have even integrated into both Tenshou and Jigoku-controlled lands as workers. Those that have moved into human society are unnatural outliers but have been some of the most intelligent members of the rynoc family, contributing to the vast markets of Tenshou and Jigoku. Those that choose to remain in their wild territories are usually successful at protecting their lands, even having been documented teaming up with humans and elephunks to fight off dragons invading their land.
Intelligent, powerful, short, and some may even argue cute, the rynoc is a versatile species and one of Avalon’s most successful. If they continue to evolve in the direction they have been since they were discovered before the flood, then many believe they will eventually fully integrate into human society. One can only hope that these mighty warriors will one day cooperate with mankind.
