Many thanks to my Bambu Labs P1S printer which pretty much holds your hand through the printing process. I will show all the bits and pieces of the final version next week and show it powering a camera. ln.run/0H8pw #CinemaGear #arri #arris #16mm #3Dprinting #bambulabs

The pictures here show the prototype made from PETG HF, after having tried PLA and the almost impossible to print with ABS. For the final version, I think I will stick with the PETG HF as it seems to give the strongest and cleanest print, but in the more traditional black to match the camera.

Despite the struggles, I managed to make a prototype connector that works with the ARRI S/ST camera, maintains the cable lock feature of the ST, and still fits within the envelope of the camera for tripod mounting.

Having learned traditional drafting in school, I found the CAD drawing process to be … less than intuitive, but I have slowly begun to figure it out. I used the machine shop model I made a few months back of the ARRI S power connector as the template to build my 3D model.

I recently acquired 3 ARRI S cameras, and of course, none of them had power cables. As it was high time for me to finally take the time to learn to use a 3D modeling program, I spent much of this week stumbling through that learning process.

Anyone who has owned an ARRI S camera of any variety knows that the factory power cable has a long, but limited lifespan, and once it’s no longer usable, it quickly becomes unobtainable. ln.run/0H8pw #CinemaGear #arri #arris #16mm #3Dprinting #bambulabs

At the heart of the Fox Cine Simplex camera is the film transport. The differences between the much loved Mitchell movements and the Fox movement are very difficult to describe in words. #CinemaGear #TwentiethCenturyFox #CineSimplex #simplex #camera #movement #35mm youtube.com/shorts/X59Z5...

This Twentieth Century-Fox Cine Simplex camera, serial number 109, comes from the collection of my friend, noted cinematographer and collector John Hora. This camera has been carefully cleaned, repaired, and restored to working condition.

The Cine Simplex truly represents a milestone in 1930s engineering, and the Fox camera system, including the Fox Freehead Camera Mount, as well as the unitized variable speed motor and interlock motor, made this camera far ahead of its time.

From the design of the intermittent movement, to the way the movement and other mechanisms were isolated from the camera casting, to the new and innovative way the shutter was mounted to the camera, great lengths were taken to capture as much noise and vibration within the camera body as possible.

From its inception, this camera was designed specifically to be sound silent without the added size and weight of a blimp housing. To achieve this, the camera’s designers rethought everything about how the internal mechanisms of the camera operated together.

A few examples are on display at aviation museums in California, Arizona, and Ohio. Research on the Mitchell KF-8 has proven quite difficult. If any of you camera or aircraft enthusiasts out there have more information about this interesting camera, we would love to hear from you! ln.run/wgGOs

The compartment was insulated to protect the equipment from temperature extremes, and featured a camera vacuum system, a viewfinder dehydration system, and the necessary systems to support all of this equipment. Records indicate that these planes were in service between 1955 and the early 1960s.

The modified nose section of the jet was divided into three camera bays to house a variety of photographic instrumentation, including the KF-8.

These cameras were used in the mid to late 1950s in the specially modified Grumman F9F-8P Photo Cougar reconnaissance aircraft. Grumman delivered 110 of these specially modified Photo Cougar fighter jets between 1955 and 1957.

The lenses were encapsulated in a special housing that helped prevent freezing and fogging, and allowed the pilot to remotely control the aperture and focus. The motors were specially designed to work at aircraft voltages and to run the camera up to 120 frames per second.

The viewfinder and L-base were omitted from the design, and, in order to achieve a lower overall profile, a set of coaxial magazines was designed to sit behind the camera.

The camera body is based on the design of the Mitchell GC/Standard but adapted to capture high speed reconnaissance motion pictures from the nose cone of an aircraft.
