Fieldwork can be gruelling and tough — but even with the challenges, CIRES scientists get to experience some amazing views. Like this one, near a weather station at Swiss Camp in Greenland in 2010. #FieldworkFriday #PhotoFriday

As the West warms, wildfires are burning at higher elevations and charring watersheds where the snowpack accumulates. New research has found that snow is melting earlier in burned areas. I wrote about the study—and the implications for the water supply and ecosystems.

“These changes matter,” he says. “They alter the temperature gradient between the tropics and poles, which drives global weather. Even if you never go to the polar regions, it affects the storms you experience.” buff.ly/EywubbP

Cassano has witnessed dramatic changes in three decades of research. Arctic sea ice has declined about 40 percent in recent decades. Antarctic sea ice, once at record highs, now hovers at record lows. Ice shelves are collapsing.

Did you know mountains can sometimes collapse under their own weight? A CIRES scientist found new evidence of this happening in what is now the Mojave Desert. As tectonic plates collided, the crust compressed into a narrow belt.

CIRES scientists in NOAA’s National Center for Environmental Information calibrate and develop data products for instruments like SUVI that monitor the solar atmosphere. Their work helps forecasters better predict and mitigate the effects of solar flares and other phenomena on Earth.

The imagery in this video came from the Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI), a telescope aboard the GOES-19 satellite that monitors the Sun in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength range.

This video shows three X-class solar flares (strong emissions of electromagnetic radiation) on the Sun on November 9, 10, and 11. The associated coronal mass ejections (streams of hot solar plasma) streaming towards Earth disrupted Earth's magnetosphere and triggered auroras as far south as Florida.

Moving people and equipment during fieldwork can be difficult during the best of times. For the MOSAiC team, inclement weather, polar night, and their location directly on the sea ice provided unique challenges for transportation. #FieldworkFriday
