As one of those kids who loved reading history books (still do), I was horrified by the fate of Calvin Coolidge, Jr. when I found out about it in 2nd grade. If even the US presidnt's son could die from an infected blister, none of us were safe! My mom assured me "that could never happen, now."
In 1924, Calvin Coolidge's 16-yr-old son played tennis on the White House grounds w/o wearing socks. He got a blister and was dead from infection a week later.

This is unthinkable today—which is why I wrote this series. Cuz the systems that save us from this kind of fate are in urgent need of care.
For a yr, I've been working on a series for The New Atlantis about the vast systems that underlie our lives. Our ancestors built them up over decades to fend off hunger, thirst, darkness and disease. But too few of us know about them—and they're all at risk. The conclusion is now available online:

Not that we should be picnicking on Stonehenge, but I am still delighted that there's a photo from 1865 of people picnicking on Stonehenge, preserved by the guitarist of Queen.
This is the oldest known family photo taken at Stonehenge. c 1865, back when you could picnic on the great sarsens themselves.

The original photo is owned by Queen Guitarist Brian May!

Today I saw this painting of Prince Don Carlos by Sofonisba Anguissola, and although I'm not a fashion historian it seems that 1567 might've been when European menswear achieved peak codpiece.

Happy Feast of Saint Cecilia, patroness of musicians -- especially to these two, who I hope were well paid for playing outside Oviedo Cathedral in a cold drizzle, wearing traditional Asturian costumes, as a wedding party headed into the chapel.

Day 21: Noir made outside the US

LE QUAI DES BRUMES (1938)
As close as noir gets to visual poetry: Directed by Marcel Carné, screenplay by the poet Jacques Prévert, starring Jean Gabin ("LE Jean", as Jean Renoir called him) in excelsis & a luminous Michèle Morgan.

Rewatching NOTHING TO DECLARE for the 1st time since it came out. A then-topical comedy about the Schengen Area & the absurdity of so many of the world's borders, but now as relevant as ever (no coincidence that its director/star is the French son of an Algerian migrant).

Editing documents is rarely emotional, but typing the words "elimination of HIV is now an achievable goal" got to me. When my husband started doing AIDS research in the 1980s, volunteers in clinical trials knew they probably wouldn't live to see the results. And look at us now. Celebrate science!

Here's a really intriguing #noirvember watch list, featuring Alain Delon (*sigh*) & the only movie ever directed by the great Peter Lorre.
For your #Noirvember pleasure, here are ten more international, ie, non-American, noirs that you might want to catch up with. Another past post from my Substack, it’s free to read at the link below.

Horrifying, indeed. As anyone who has ever done research by deep dives into original archive documents can confirm, they're called "documentaries" for a reason. I've interpreted for documentary filmmakers & seen how interviews with real people can turn up fresh evidence which would otherwise be lost

Hey, I've got a question for @moviessilently.bsky.social & any other silent film folks who want to chime in:
My daughter--previously not open to silents at all--is now interested in seeing a Clara Bow movie (because of the Taylor Swift song); which one would you recommend?

"1899, people! Early film is amazing."
Georges Méliès is usually associated with long shots and formal compositions but this scene of reporters charging out of a courtroom to file their stories in THE DREYFUS AFFAIR is shockingly dynamic. 1899, people! Early film is amazing.

I will definitely make this!
I have perfected my mushroom burger! Makes lean ground juicy and stretches it financially and calorically

1 lb ground meat
8 oz. Mushrooms

Spice and season those fungi, sautee them until they give up their juices, immersion blend them, add them to the meat, form patties, tada!

The Johnny Cash song "Folsom Prison Blues", the paraphrasing of which has apparently caused a moderation kerfuffle in these parts, is so well known that when I've performed it in Spain, to audiences that don't even know English very well, they will sing along to that line about the man in Reno.
