Across the country, news deserts are expanding and trust in media is declining. Still, journalists are on the ground when news happens, talking to sources, verifying facts, and correcting the record when necessary.

CJFE and the Canadian Association of Journalists @cajournalists.bsky.social are proud to join UNIFOR’s #factcheckhere campaign, highlighting the vital role of credible news outlets in Canada.

Journalists should not face such harassment or threats for doing their job. Informed reporting or analysis is part of free expression and a cornerstone of democracy. #journalismisnotacrime

Her comments were misrepresented and amplified by politicians and influencers, landing her on a website targeting people accused of “celebrating” Kirk’s death.

Canadian journalist Rachel Gilmore’s online posts following his killing, warning that his death could radicalize the far right, was met with a torrent of online abuse, including death and rape threats.

CJFE stands with them. We oppose all attempts to restrict press freedom and block entry to journalists during conflicts. We call for accountability, protection of journalists under international law, and immediate, independent access to Gaza.

Since October 2023, at least 192 journalists & media workers have been killed in Gaza, making this the deadliest period on record for the press, according to CJP figures. Many more face detention, injury, or starvation. Blocking access & targeting media workers undermines the world’s right to know.

BREAKING: Canada has now joined a coalition of 27 other governments in calling on Israel to allow immediate foreign media access to Gaza and to protect journalists.

Six journalists, including Pulitzer-winning Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, were killed in an Israeli strike near Gaza’s Al Shifa Hospital. The UN condemned the attack as a “grave breach of international law.” Media groups, including CJFE, demand accountability & protection for journalists.

“Under different circumstances, I would have shared this article on Facebook to spark a discussion. Now, I’m not sure how to connect with my readers –I just hope they’ll find me somewhere else.” –Mostafa Al-a’sar

Growing up in Egypt, I knew access to news could be fragile. I didn’t expect to lose it again in Canada

When Meta blocked Canadian news content in response to Bill C-18, it didn’t just impact major publishers. It severed a vital link for people across the country who rely on social media to stay informed, as well as younger people who prefer social media over traditional outlets.

In a new piece for The Walrus, CJFE/Massey College Fellow Mostafa Al-a’sar reflects on what it means to lose access to news –twice.

In Egypt, the state controlled access to news. In Canada, censorship comes from a tech giant.

CJFE is deeply concerned by this pattern of intimidation against journalists doing public-interest reporting.

We echo The Globe’s Editor-in-Chief, David Walmsley, who stated: “Any attempt to interfere with legitimate newsgathering is an attack on the public’s right to know.”

Photos of journalist Carrie Tait in public settings with sources were shared by an anonymous X account, which also made personal references and threats to expose her sources. The account was suspended after complaints.

A Globe and Mail reporter investigating political interference in Alberta’s health authority has been targeted by anonymous harassment, including surveillance, doxing, and a spoofed phone number.

CJFE joins these calls and urges:

• Immediate humanitarian access for journalists and civilians alike

• An end to restrictions on international media entry

• Concrete protections for journalists reporting in conflict zones
cjfe.bsky.social
Dozens of other international outlets — including CBC News, ABC, and The Washington Post — have echoed these concerns in a separate statement coordinated by the International News Safety Institute, calling for urgent access to food, protection for journalists, and the entry of foreign media.

Journalists in Gaza are now struggling to access food as the war continues and aid remains blocked.

In a joint statement, the BBC, Reuters, AFP, and the Associated Press said their staff on the ground are “increasingly unable to feed themselves and their families.”
