New arrival available at CAMco—a clarinet choir piece about the trials and tribultions of L.A. Traffic by Christin Hablewitz:
www.clarinetallmusic...
This work has "a happy driving groove, exaggerated slow down, frustrated outbursts, pleas for better traffic and unexpected starts and stops!"

On my stand this week is an utterly fresh and invigorating concerto for klezmer clarinet by Wlad Marhulets:
www.clarinetallmusic...
Besides the klezmer aspects, the addition of a drum set and an electric bass contributes beats from the realms of jazz/funk/hip-hop.

Many, many linocuts drying.
New print edition releasing soon...

On my stand is a late-Romantic gem, a warm hug, in the form of Amy Beach's "Berceuse":
www.clarinetallmusic...
Adapted from the violin, this 3-ish minute lullaby sits wonderfully on the clarinet and is approachable for intermediate players who can manage a single altissimo E.

The large X is for a key click “by any means necessary,” while the small x is a key click from a specific pitch fingering. Seen in Roger Zare’s “In Memoriam, Pluto,” as found in “Space Bass.”

New arrival now available at CAMco! Alexis Ciesla's "Sonatine atypique":
www.clarinetallmusic...
This "atypical" sonata packs in great variety across its three movements: first, a chase between clarinet and piano, then a relaxed and reserved middle movement, and finally a Klezmer-toned finisher.

Here is a substantial clarinet quartet by Alvin Singleton titled "Apple":
www.clarinetallmusic...

It starts very sparsely, with just a few note popping out of the silence, and employs an "additive structure" to build up slowly.

Sometimes you need a helping hand from your colleague, mid-performance, as seen in Cynthia Folio’s “Developing Hues,” for flute and bass clarinet.

Some of life's struggles are timeless.
Indeed, in Medieval times, German songwriter Neidhardt depicted the discomfort of a cold winter, and a knight's lack of "sweet reward" from his beloved that he believes he deserves for his service to her.

There are plenty of Bach arrangements for clarinet, and while they have their usefulness, if you're going to thoroughly study the famous Cello Suites and adapt them to clarinet, it's best to get as close to the source as possible!

One my stand this week is a solid staple of the unaccompanied clarinet repertoire—John Mayer's "Raga Music":
www.clarinetallmusic...
A raga is a melodic framework in Indian classical music, and the present work uses a different one for each of the nine short movements.

Clarinetists are eating well with a new étude book based on Debussy's Rhapsodie, courtesy of Gregory Barrett!

Here is a clarinet quartet inspired by concern for the environment—"Once there were birds," by Fran Griffin:

No, it’s not THAT kind of croissant. The full expressive direction translates to “At first tender, then with growing irritation.”

As seen in Anne Olga de Pass’ “Les objets musicaux” for clarinet and piano.

Now here is a menu I'd like to feast on: "Entrée Funky," "Entrée Nocturne"...oh, hold up, it's not that kind of entrée. This is “entrée de ballet,” a choreographic form of 18th-century opera-ballet, and it informed a new clarinet concerto by Guillaume Connesson:

Drop everything and take a moment to bask in the blues. This is a heavy heart, sultry shuffle, splendid sigh...a concerto for clarinet and wind ensemble from Wynton Marsalis:

James Spinazolla adapted this movement for the licorice stick to great effect.
