She bent low, clasped her hands, and smiled.

I like to think of myself a rogueish corsair, a dragon rider, flying from place to place aboard the Rocinante, dashing and debonair. But when this lady wished me a happy birthday, which was in November, all I saw reflected back at me was... sympathy.
Happy Birthday?! — Rolling for Initiative
Our friends kindly gave us a voucher for a v-e-r-y swanky restaurant in London, so we made a day of it. We went to the aquarium, went to the Moulin Rouge musical, we laughed and rolled our way around ...

'Mobility has to be the honourable mention. I’m good most of the time but when I’m hot or especially when a fever hits I walk like an adventurously bipedal stoat. Lifting my legs becomes less of a command and more of an enthusiastic hope, like offering prayers to Norse gods for the chance of rain.'
Trust to hope — Rolling for Initiative
Many symptoms of MS are annoying. Numbness in the fingers, spasticity in the legs, the occasional bladder spasm that threatens to cause a small localised flood. Such symptoms are challenging to manage...

I'm 6 years into MS now and the journey has been so frightening and I've felt so very unsafe, uncertain about the future. But through it all I've started to cherish the moment better, to cherish relationships, and this is one of those connections for which I can be really grateful.

I read your post. It's some of the kindest feedback I've received and I will treasure it. Thanks so much.

'Now sure, he didn't give me his number. I was strong but I'd left attractive behind as soon as it started raining, and being this covered in mud with hair slick to my face, sexy was just a particularly strong option in scrabble.'
What matter wounds? — Rolling for Initiative
My journey with mobility challenges began 2 ½ years ago, when my last relapse changed my ‘couch to 5k’ into ‘mostly couch’ and the only ‘5 k' I was gaining tended to settle around my midriff. I used ...

'Recently I’ve been making friends without telling them I'm trans. That’s what happened at jury service, why I’m pulling endless tissues out of the box like a children’s magician. For just a little while I experienced what it was like not to be openly trans in this world.

And I loved every moment.'
The cost of visibility — Rolling for Initiative
I arrived home from court today for the last time. Jury service has concluded. As I walked in the front door the emotion of what had happened hit me. Inside I felt an unexpected sense of loss, a sudde...

'When the Usher held out an arm to my ailing self, careful to ensure that I got out of the court safely, it wouldn’t have been prudent to refuse him and then faceplant in front of the stenographer.

I’m pretty sure you can be held in contempt for being a defiant asshat.'
Do I need help… maybe I do… — Rolling for Initiative
I’m terrible at knowing when I need help. Before I had my current wheelchair, The Rocinante, even before my first wheelchair, Firefly, I still regularly refused help I sorely needed. I once took a tra...

I just read your book cover to cover. Sharing your story with such honesty and vulnerability is deeply moving. You remind us all that we are never alone.

I'm happy to join my kin in offering my support, such as it is.

Wait wait wait. So to avoid getting sued employers are going to just provide gender neutral facilities?

The court case is going to result in everyone peeing together?

Almost poetic in its irony.

Been recording my podcast for 2 years and I feel the same. Been doing voice training and at the same time disappointed in myself for succumbing to the internalised stigma.

Keep thinking of xmen: 'We shouldn't try to fit into society, society should aspire to be more like us, different, and proud'
