Took a walk up to the Cafe on the Canal/Lambhill Stables and the outside lights produced my 160th moth species (all stages, no trapping) of the year ;

Earthy Powdercap, Golden Waxcap and Oily Waxcap.

Hi Justin, that's a Pale Tussock caterpillar.

No problem Nicky. They'll make their way into the leaf litter eventually. They're often found on fence rails/posts at this time of year. These species feed on Aphids on the underside of Sycamore leaves but end up on the ground when the leaves drop.

Some species will overwinter in a state of diapause in leaf litter.

The downstairs lights are on 24/7 so there's a good supply of inverts (midges, craneflies etc) to keep them going. I'm just glad the moths are too big for them to tackle!

For some unknown reason this morning i decided to count the Zygiella x-notata that call the local Tesco windows their home...and came up with a total of 97 indivduals!
