“Britain is a nation of neighbours, not strangers — and it’s time we built a politics of hope that reflects that.”

Mandatory government IDs are common in many countries. They’re useful, reliable and help to deliver better public services.

But they will do nothing to stop illegal workers in the UK.

This is a good idea, badly sold.

Today we decided that if teleporters existed people would definitely piss through them

If for nothing else, we need answers to this question to hand so that when crises occur so we have choices about how we respond – rather than merely “do the same and hope”

Capitalism won’t last forever.

What comes next?

It's so strange to me how the absolutely core question at the heart of politics - "what kind of society do we want to live in?" - is so absent from discussion, either assumed settled or reduced to meaningless generalities.

Starmer’s moral flexibility undermines him domestically, but with Trump it serves him well.

"Everyone knows why Keir Starmer is doing this, and however unpleasant it is to watch, most people seem to accept that he has to do it. He approaches Trump as one might a very rich but increasingly senile relative who is in the habit of changing their will on a daily basis." 👏😆 @roberthutton.co.uk
Flattering the beast | Robert Hutton | The Critic Magazine
In the olden days, a kingdom threatened by a strangely-tinted, tiny-handed, fire-breathing beast might opt to attempt to buy it off with a princess or two. Obviously times have moved on since then.

Asteroid Donaldjohanson just got some new names for its various surface features.

They’re pigeons pecking at the economy, desperate for rewards that won’t come.

We need better people, with better ideas.

I think the neoliberals of the peak neoliberalism ascendant era actually had a story in their heads, they could explain to you why this was smart (which doesn't mean they were correct). A generation later, you can't get an explanation out of Rachel Reeves, she's just performing holy incantations

I am, always, an optimist. But that optimism is sometimes difficult to hold on to.

Warsaw has added a striking new landmark to its riverfront: the Kładka Bridge, a walking and cycling crossing that links the historic Old Town and revitalised Praga district. Opened in 2024, it embodies their ongoing effort to reconnect with the Vistula River, and expand its active travel networks.🧵

Russia attacked Poland with drones to test NATO’s resolve in defending allied territory and assess the speed of its response. NATO forces successfully intercepted most drones in a timely manner, and Poland is now considering invoking Article 4.
