My favourite moment from
Fraction & Jimenez’s Batman so far.

I've just been blown away by what is maybe the Irish equivalent of Dick Van Dyke's epically terrible cockney accent in MARY POPPINS. Brando in Michael Winner's execrable THE NIGHTCOMERS. Every syllable lilted from the a crock of gold at the end of a rainbow. Ouch.

Ah Three O'Clock High, State of Grace - such early promise.

Phil Joanou was still an interesting director back then - stylish & technically strong - and it’s lush & beautiful & a decent bit of Hitchcockery. He used Roberts and his weird charisma nicely here and in HEAVENS PRISONERS too. Most middling ‘90s thrillers seem so mature and well-made these days.

It’s VERRRRY different but I also like Phil Joanou’s Robicheaux adaptation, Heavens Prisoners, which is schlocky but entertaining. Really beautifully shot, Alex Baldwin is good as Dave & it is likewise very atmospheric.

HOUSE OF GUINNESS: Oh god no. Paddywhackery of the first order, begorrah. Accents across the board and off the board, Dublin as a Victorian redbrick hellhole/Poshos playground with no actual personality. Some fine actors struggling with their dialogue.

One of the most Dublin things imaginable: one of the big tough Gridiron players got mugged & robbed in Temple Bar last night.

That time when Warren Ellis and Tom Raney parodied the previous half century of superhero comics in the pages of Stormwatch, of all places

I owned like 50+ Action Force/GI Joe figures as a kid. These are the only three still intact. Every single other one has had the rubber inside split. Two of these are Europe only exclusives apparently. Get me.

J Robert Lennon on Elmore Leonard is a good read:

‘Elmore Leonard’s “ten rules” provide an insight into the creative process of a stylist who exhibited the kind of sentence-level mastery you rarely see paired with the nuts-and-bolts rudiments of plot and action.’

Considering the fact that he seems widely loved and appreciated, I still think he's underrated. He's an absolute master. Every book he's on should be a huge event and sell massive amounts.

RIP Claudia Cardinale. One of the great beauties of European cinema and the talent to match. A fistful of classic movies: ROCCO & HIS BROTHERS, THE LEOPARD, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, FITZCARRALDO. Few actresses have ever made emotional devastation so good to look at.

Holy cow the line-up of artists in Batman issue 400 is incredible: Lightle, Perez, Sienkiewicz, Art Adams, Joe Kubert, Leonardi, Bolland. It’s in the ‘80s reprint DC Finest: Red Skies. Hairy Chested Love God Batman, to quote Grant Morrison, is my favourite Batman.
