The fight against oligarchy is foremost a communications battle and to win a communications battle one needs to stay psychologically oriented towards winning: within every crisis there are opportunities, but only by staying 'clear-eyed' can one see them. And yes, they want you to give up.
rbreich.bsky.social
Never forget this: The forces rigging our economy, undermining our democracy, polluting our planet, and stoking hatred are counting on you to give up. Cynicism is how they win. Stay clear-eyed and ready for the fight ahead.

Worried about what's happening in the U.S.? Me too. Our new #Sovereignty Saturdays #Podcast is an action-item filled chance to feel more #Empowered about making a difference in this moment.

I was in #Ottawa as Canadian #climate survivors called for an #EmissionsCap. @mark-carney.bsky.social has a choice: listen to wildfire survivors, or to oil corporations trying to divide us with phantom pipelines that make no economic sense regardless of deregulation www.hilltimes.com/story/2024/1...

By definition again here: if you think a #NoKings protest is terrorism then you're a monarchist. The U.S. was literally founded on the principle "No Kings."

The U.S. founders missed that Kings emerge from the consolidation of mass wealth by the few. So long as that can happen Kings are inevitable.
atrupar.com
The campaign against “antifa” is about establishing a beachhead for further attacks on speech and assembly rights. We see that today in the effort to preemptively label No Kings protesters as “terrorists.”

Trying to scare people. But it won't work. No one looks scared to me anymore. And it's power in numbers. All the TV hits in the world won't change the fact that when Americans see the sheer number of people out there, absolutely no one will believe anything these guys say.

Sen. Roger Marshall: "October 18 is when the protest gets here. This will be a Soros paid-for protest for his professional protesters. The agitators show up. We'll have to get the National Guard out. Hopefully it will be peaceful. I doubt it."

(2/2) And I don't mean do what Fox News does, I mean reach out to some anti-hate orgs, talk about the rise in fascist rhetoric, the rise in hate and the dangers and impact. The actual real risks to people that exist now because of fascism.
conorcurtis.bsky.social
(1/2) Okay, this article is not bad but this speaks to a problem I have with #CBC / #CDNmedia coverage: If you're going to talk about people who are #anti-fascist maybe interview some? Or people who are at risk of persecution because of this rhetoric targetting antifa?

ANALYSIS | Why Trump's team is portraying Antifa as a terrorist threat | CBC News
U.S. President Donald Trump is trying to persuade Americans that the anti-fascist movement dubbed Antifa poses as grave a threat to the country as designated terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah.

If your plan is to dismantle all anti-fascism then you are, by definition, fascists.

My gosh. After the US bombed multiple boats in the middle of the ocean, murdering people on grounds that they were allegedly "carrying drugs," the US Attorney General says "Just like we did with cartels, we're going to take the same approach, President Trump, with Antifa."

From Donald Trump's Roundtable on Antifa just now —
"Antifa has been around in various iterations for almost 100 years in some instances, going back to the Weimar Republic in Germany."

Provided there are elections this is likely to be what will happen.

Pritzker: "He wants to militarize major cities because he wants us to get used to the idea of troops on the streets. I believe he's gonna post people outside of polling places and if he needs to in order to control those elections, he'll assume control of the ballot boxes & count the votes himself"

Wasn't expecting to agree with a former CSIS director but this is correct: “If the US becomes even more authoritarian, we will be pushed further,” said Elcock. “They will want more subservience on trade.”

Can Canada Survive Donald Trump?
Under assault from an increasingly aggressive and authoritarian United States, the country’s future looks less secure than at any time in postwar history.

There's a lot of political theatre happening here for sure. But beyond the theatre the truth remains the same: #KeystoneXL, as with any new pipeline project, is a bad idea for the climate and for Canada’s economic future.

(1/4) We need a renewable revolution to create long-term stable jobs in AB, SK, & NL. Canada can go 100% renewable: www.sierraclub.ca/canada-can-g...

But we're still talking about dead-end pipelines, and now liabilities that make us more interconnected with the U.S.

And to be clear, maybe we'll get some news about a deal after today, maybe it won't all be bad news. But when we scrap things like the Digital Services Tax to get to that point we're also emboldening our opponents in the long run. Flattering the tyrant that doesnt work long term.
conorcurtis.bsky.social
At this point too this is about more than trade, and what really worries me is that Carney doesn't see that.

Trump is clearly making a run for a military enforced dictatorship. A PM should be preparing for the very real possibility Trump intends that include Canada at some point down the line.
conorcurtis.bsky.social
My bet: Not actually a warm embrace, Carney's being sarcastic about the 'transformative.' He doesn't actually like Trump & is trying to use flattery to get a deal BUT

He's also making the mistake of thinking any of that will work. It won't, you make concessions to Trump and he'll just take more.
conorcurtis.bsky.social
That does pretty much sum it up.
conorcurtis.bsky.social
No, we don't like you Donald. Most Americans are lovely people. But we don't like you.

Trump: "The people of Canada will love us again. Most of them still do. If you say only 25% -- I think they love us."
conorcurtis.bsky.social
Trump 'we are the king of being screwed by tarrifs.' Yeah Donald, that is true actually. It is in fact remarkably special the level to which you have hurt your own country with #tarrifs.... it would be hard to do a better job of hurting one's own country if one tried.... oh right... #USpoli #CDNpoli
conorcurtis.bsky.social
Again, just going to say it, very, very bad time to further integrate our defensive infrastructure with that of the U.S. Not a good idea. #CDNpoli #GoldenDome #Carney
conorcurtis.bsky.social
Canada will be the next target if Trump attempts & succeeds at a military takeover of the U.S. and enforces a dictatorship. The most strategic thing we can do right now as Canadians is support those Americans peacefully resisting Trump.
