Looking forward to corpus analyses of new uses of the word "divisive" (now that swastika is a divisive symbol). Reminds me of our work on news describing pick up artists as "controversial" in the context of Julien Blanc sexually assaulting women in broad daylight

New paper out w @davidbritain.bsky.social & T. Blaxter: Using data from 50K speakers, we show that many once-distinctive English regional terms have sharply declined. Even the northern backend for ‘autumn’ now survives only at low rates, mostly among older, less mobile speakers. tinyurl.com/39uy4x5e

On balance, the editor’s job is not something I’d ever regret. It’s mostly a high! But the lows are very low.
Spending all day in my editor’s account, reading papers, reading reviews. It’s delightful and so satisfying to be the first to read the new research in the field, and it’s also depressing and incredibly frustrating because people waste our time with barely finished drafts, AI, or unhelpful reviews
