The Akai GX-255 is officially DONE! Just finished wrapping the side panels with a black wood grain finish to match the rest of my furniture and give it a slightly more modern look. Super happy with the results. You'd never know I had to make a totally new left panel it was so bad.

I was thinking about replacing all the caps, then I opened it up, saw the amount of caps and decided the caps are fine.

Most likely a dirty switch. Spraying the back side of the switch with deoxit and clicking it back and forth usually does the trick. Sometimes taking the switch off the board and cracking it open to clean the contacts is necessary for really bad switches.

Had a dream last night I was drinking a Yoo-Hoo energy drink called Yoo-Hoo Flipside. It had a little logo on it with a camping trailer, river and a mountain range. That was it. That was a whole dream. A camping themed energy drink.

This model sold for $650 in the late 70s. That would be like paying over $3000 today. Man, someone must have really liked Christmas music. Oh wait, I know somebody like that.

The end result of hours of fiddling and cleaning heads, pinch rollers, potentiometers, replacing dead transistors. The sound is incredible. Hope Bluesky doesn't garble up the audio with compression.

I did it! I made my own mix tape on the reel to reel with the new old stock Sony tape. Recorded at 7 1/2 inches per second and it sounds absolutely amazing. It took some time but it was so much fun. It's such a satisfyingly tangible experience. I'm hooked.

Working again on the Akai GX-G55 reel to reel today. Replaced all the 2SC458 transistors with modern KSC1845 transistors and the left channel has come back to life! Stereo sound is crystal clear with no noise whatsoever. Those 458s were wreaking havoc on the pre amp. Probably why it was in the trash

The movie ended up being a generic romantic comedy and I wasn't even in it. It felt like the ending to Pee Wee's Big Adventure.
