don’t think i’ve seen The Strangers since it was first released, and i’d forgotten how straight and raw the relationship drama is played at the top

more folks seeing 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which i will say is very good, though nowhere near the revelatory stylistic experience of the prior film

fans of Primate need to give The Strangers: Prey at Night a look

caught wind that people are fighting about One Battle After Another again, and i just gotta say... the fights are gonna look silly down the line

it certainly did not help that i rewatched Close Encounters of the Third Kind before watching Is This Thing On?, because the contrast *really* highlighted how absolutely full of shit it is as a "divorce" movie

Richard Dreyfuss was 29 Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Roy Neary was just Marty Supreme.

tfw you've got a piece on the way that missed the anniversary it was pegged to because it's stuck in "fact-checking" even though it's really just an interview, but it's partly about Israel and Palestine

y’know, i don’t think i’d ever seen photos from her life during the Holocaust, and it’s quite bracing
just a few words about my grandmother, along with some photos my sister dug up from her albums, like this one from her childhood during the war www.justatad.xyz/p/eva-rachel...

One Battle After Another (Anderson, 2025)
this is why the “wine mom” stuff drives me nuts. Even when it’s ostensibly affectionate there’s a whiff of condescending misogyny, and the assumption that activism is supposed to be cool

bringing woke back so quickly is great, like how they followed Sister Act with Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit just a year-and-a-half later

Saving Private Ryan, a widely misunderstood film, deserved Best Picture over Shakespeare in Love, and maybe even The Thin Red Line

I think my experience and thoughts on Hamnet are largely shaped by being a person who sits in a darkened booth, behind glass showing movies to an audience that 90% of the time doesn't even know someone is there doing that. Of being that last link in the chain between artist > audience.

Hamnet, the rare case of a film where i think all the criticisms are correct, but the movie worked on me, and not cheaply i don't think
January 12, 2026 at 2:10 PM
this is good, and my counter is simply that i don't think Hamnet is about Shakespeare at all, and it's certainly not about Hamlet

once again, my interview with the incredible Wagner Moura about his work in The Secret Agent, one of the year's major achievements
‘The Secret Agent’ Is More Than Just a Great Political Thriller
‘Narcos’ star Wagner Moura talks about his role in director Kleber Mendonça Filho's '70s-set Brazilian drama and how life under the Bolsonaro regime shaped their collaboration.
