Besides being costly, means-testing creates potentially lethal false negative errors and non-takeup issues that universality eliminates in favor of non-lethal false positive errors that can be addressed via the tax system

Universal basic income and healthcare and progressive taxes are the way to go

Rights are inherently universal. If you have a right to something, it's because everyone else does too. It also goes the other way. Something universal can over time become perceived as a right even if it didn't start as being seen as one.

This is why the U in Universal Basic Income is so important

In case you missed my latest Substack, it's a collection of the evidence from recent guaranteed basic income and unconditional cash pilots focused on homeless populations. As Bluesky knows, of course it works, but still, it's good to have evidence like this on our side to support our demand for UBI.
We Gave Homeless People Cash. They Bought Housing Not Drugs.
The evidence from Vancouver to Denver is undeniable: When people in crisis receive money, substance use goes down, employment goes up, and homelessness ends.

FYI, here's a very long thread of what we know from all the many pilots and studies done, all one one page. It's my pinned thread unrolled.

The correct answer to this is "Yes, and everyone else too."
Should artists get a basic income like they do in Ireland?
Could the government pay salaries to musicians and artists - no strings attached like they do in Ireland?

Once we have universal basic income, general strikes become more doable (in fact, all strikes do). More people could join them, and they could last longer in duration.
A major coalition is launching a general strike in Minnesota tomorrow, aimed at pushing out ICE.

It includes:

-Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1005
-The MN AFL-CIO
-SEIU Local 26
-UNITE HERE Local 17
-CWA Local 7250
-Saint Paul and Minneapolis Federations of Educators
-Faith leaders

And more. 🧵
