Interesting to see the Guardian's @dpcarrington.bsky.social weighing in on this. My take, as someone covering microplastics heavily for the past year (and currently sitting at a 200+ person conference with many of the scientists in question):

‘A bombshell’: doubt cast on discovery of microplastics throughout human body
Exclusive: Some scientists say many detections are most likely error, with one high-profile study called a ‘joke’

I really enjoy LLMs and I’m glad we invented them

I don't think I will ever buy a Samsung product
Samsung brings ads to US fridges
Samsung’s ‘screens everywhere’ initiative is morphing into ads everywhere.

I don't think it's clear canonically whether black mesa actually is a government or private lab - you'd think government from HL1, but then in the Portal games it's clear they see Black Mesa as a competitor, but that's also possible if they're government, so I think it's ambiguous

Nate Silver is right about most things - especially Bluesky

Personally I say it like Jerrymandering but I pronounce the guy’s name with the hard G
August 22, 2025 at 6:56 PM
It’s even in the Wikipedia page - apparently they still pronounce it that way in his hometown

@mkonnikova.bsky.social Gerry’s name is pronounced with a hard G

What is this like noble savage view of women that imagines they don’t have agency

Don’t make policy based on sound bites
This is one of those things that sounds good but the actual policy is completely incoherent and likely to make things worse.
If a global company is paying its workers so little that they need federal benefits, that company should lose eligibility for tax incentives.

You prefer him to be so unpopular that the Reform party comes to power?

Glad we’re not saying unhoused anymore - that’s dumb

Honestly a version of Starmer without terrible political instincts might be doing a lot better

Many such cases

I’d recommend starting at a higher pitch so you give yourself more room to fall
August 3, 2025 at 7:21 AM
The 4th tone is sometimes described as being forceful, and culturally we tend to associate being forceful with having a low pitch, so starting the 4th tone too low is one of the main pronunciation mistakes that nonnative speakers make with the 4th tone

@histphilosophy.bsky.social I love your podcasts - I’d just like to give a suggestion on your pronunciation of dao in Chinese - it’s a 4th tone but sometimes it sounds like you’re saying it in 3rd tone

In 20 years the Republican consensus is either that Trump was a normal republican who did good things or they try hard to forget he even existed
July 15, 2025 at 6:19 PM
You’re underrating that nothing ever happens - most likely scenario: Trump leaves office, Trump lite republicans do poorly electorally, Republican Party begins slow return to normality (takes about 10 years), die hard Trump fans stop voting, some moderates return to Republican Party

I judge the hell out of gen Z for this
