I may be missing something here, but if they’ve held the power for nearly 3 decades, why haven't they fixed everything in that time?

No 'publican president in the last 65 years has balanced the budget. The last one to do so, Eisenhower, had a high marginal tax rate (over 90%) on top earners. Every 'publican since the 1970s has run a deficit, so spare me the “fiscally conservative” bullshit.
