We’ve come together as a public to protect this place again, again and again, and we love them because we know the Boundary Waters do a lot of inherent good for us.Within the Boundary Waters watershed, you can find:    •    Over 1,100 freshwater lakes and 1,200 miles of rivers    •    A fifth of all the freshwater in the US National Forest system    •    True dark skies & views of the Northern Lights    •    Diverse wildlife    •    Unspoiled forests    •    Kind, earnest people introducing the outdoors to their children, friends and family    •    Real peaceA Chilean mining company called “Antofogasta” has tried to mine this place for years, ship the metal to China and leave the highly toxic pollution behind. Americans have written in over 675,000 times to keep this from happening. In 2023, the US government banned mining for 20 years  in the watershed to do what we, the American public, asked for.Minnesota Rep Stauber now proposes undoing the ban with the Congressional Review Act. Doing it this way would open it up and ALSO make it impossible to ever put these protections on the watershed back in the future. Congress will vote on it, and they could as soon as this week. But we can stop it!If we succeed in stopping it, the Boundary Waters stays protected.If Congress passes Rep Stauber’s proposal, it could allow reviews of public lands protections like this across the country as a rule. In that future, it wouldn’t be unrealistic for proposed reviews for other places like this to come flying out of the woodwork.We already fight hard for the Boundary Waters.
