Hi, I'm Russell! I'm a former physics professor that left academia to create art from my physics research. My visual art comes from the math for my foundational solution to plasma electrodynamics. My music comes from new instruments that use light instead of sound to create music. cosmicstudio.io
Check out the short article on my new kind of guitar in the UT-Austin magazine, the Alcalde. The photonic guitar creates music we can't hear using light. I use my physics and programming expertise to make those behaviors audible. alcalde.texasexes.org/2025/07/long...

The new frame is up! I think this was the hardest painting job I've done. I wanted the grain to show and I didn't want paint lines, so that meant numerous thin coats and sanding in between. There was so much heat that the paint basically dried on contact. Good news though, it turned out great!

I'm currently working on a frame for this piece here. This is the first artwork I had printed up to ensure the color gradients worked out in real life. The frame is turning out well but given the labor involved I probably won't take this route again. I have to have the frame finished by Tuesday.

For the first time, view the Earth like plasma does. My artwork, 'Fire in the Sky' emerges directly from my foundational plasma physics work on dynamics. Learn more about our world by enjoying the art or by digging in to the underlying physics. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

Columbia caved to Trump's demands and not only did Trump not restore grant funding now the U.S. government is directly trying to get Columbia's accreditation removed.
ED has reported to Columbia's accreditor that it "violated" anti-discrimination laws and thus has not met accreditation standards. This is the feds telling an accreditor that they should punish a uni because ED wants them to.

The iron triangle is in such danger...

The U.S. Department of Education said on Wednesday it has notified a university accreditation body that Columbia University had violated federal anti-discrimination laws by its alleged failure to protect Jewish students on its campus.

Location, location, location. Just like in real estate, in physics location can be everything. Pick the right locations and the solutions for global plasma physics are trivial. Pick the wrong locations and a solution may be nearly impossible. #NASA #Physics #Plasma #SpaceScience #SciArt (1/7)

Belated #PortfolioDay post!

Hi, I'm Russell, a physicist that uses his research in space science to create art. Physics is gated behind years of study and I'd like for everyone to be able to experience the beauty, depth, and elegance of plasma physics. #SciArt

Making progress on transitioning OMMBV from a numpy.distutils build over to Meson. A build system is needed to couple Fortran code, good for numerical performance, to user accessible Python. Not quite working yet.

So how does my work correctly describe electric fields around the Earth when all of the previous solution attempts failed? I'm so glad you asked!

This is especially cool. I created a new electrostatic solver for magnetic field lines to create independent evidence of how electric fields around the Earth behave. These behaviors drive dynamics in our atmosphere and provide the basis for my art! #Science #NASA #Plasma #SciArt #Landscape (1/6)

Here is even more evidence that the basis I've created is correct, plus a great example of where my art comes from. The plots are the uncertainty of the d vector at default settings, up to mid latitudes (a) and at northern high lats (b). #NASA #SciArt #Plasma #Science #Art #Landscape (1/4)

Previous solutions for plasma electric fields claimed that only the simplest magnetic fields had an underlying orthogonal basis. Here I demonstrate that all magnetic fields, including complex magnetic fields like the Earth's, don't break known physics as claimed. #Science #NASA #Plasma (1/4)

Previous solutions for plasma electrodynamics claimed, without evidence, that complex magnetic fields are intrinsically non-orthogonal. Here I demonstrate that the supposedly "impossible" orthogonal vector basis I've developed is driven by the magnetic field #NASA #Physics #SpaceScience. (1/9)
January 6, 2025 at 3:00 PM
Electromagnetic fields are linear and thus may be described orthogonally. I've produced the first accurate solution for plasma physics that yields orthogonal basis vectors everywhere. These plots demonstrate this feature both along a field line and in slices across the globe. #Science #NASA #Plasma

Understanding Earth's plasma dynamics requires choosing a group of directions. The Meridional direction is upward at the magnetic equator, the Zonal direction is primarily eastward, while the Field-Aligned points along the magnetic field. The non-dominant directions add spiciness. #SciArt #science

So how do we solve for plasma dynamics? First, like any physics problem, we need to define a basis. For plasma that basis depends upon the magnetic field as field lines are turned into wires, altering electric fields. My solution is the first that maintains electric field physics. #science #SciArt

Working on the Cosmic Guitar iOS plug-in this week. The CG is a new kind of guitar that is similar to an acoustic guitar. Except instead of wood it is made of metal and uses the resonance of electricity instead of sound to make music. Sounds crazy, but physics is physics. #science #SciArt #guitar
