Sunlight pooled where the ceiling had fallen in, striking the dark water and sending pale ripples of brightness up the pillars. The temple sounded hollow now: the soft slap of water against stone, the occasional drip from a crack overhead, the faint rasp of scales moving across the floor. They were the only living sounds left. Save for her. At the edge of the water knelt a man who would never move again. His likeness was flawless in stone: chiton rendered in careful folds, head tipped up. One hand hovered, fingers spread, frozen forever reaching for her. The arrow jutting from her ribs swayed with each movement, a narrow axis her whole body pivoted around. She wrapped around him in anguish, tail looping his legs, pressed to cold stone. Coils tightened by instinct, anchoring her. Behind them, other stone figures stood: her assailant’s bow still drawn, arms up hiding a face, hands lifted in a stalled plea; already thin in her memory. What stayed was her turn toward approaching steps, fear bright in her eyes, his features fixing as marble climbed his skin. Him. He adored her first as a rumor. A monster in a forgotten temple, a pair of eyes no one returned from. Yet still he came, at dawn, at dusk, leaving figs and wine and clever little offerings. His voice had followed, days later, from behind columns she could not risk looking around. Warm. Amused. Talking of the city, of petty men and smaller gods, of everything except the horror that lived in this hall. Visit by visit, it was him she began to wait for. His footsteps on the worn path. The pause before he settled on the far side of the wall, close enough that she could answer without turning, that she could almost pretend they sat together. Today, he came too late. Her body moved before the words reached her, before she recognized the shape of his shadow. By the time understanding dawned, his outstretched hand was already turning to stone. Now, she was alone at her end. The Gods were cruel.

The paper still carries that strange scent; vanilla and something warm beneath it… some kind of wood? You’ve reread the message so many times the ink feels etched into your memory. A personal request from Lord Enver Gortash. Your presence is desired. Desired. Ridiculous. And yet… here you are. The ballroom swallows you whole the moment you slip inside: golden light, mirrored walls, masked patriars drifting like ghosts made of silk. You’re suddenly aware of your own breath, too shallow, too fast. You don’t belong here. You know that instantly. Then you look up. Gortash is standing near the center of the hall, regal and impossible, mask sculpted to perfection. And beside him… her. A tiefling woman in midnight blue, horns crowned in delicate bone, gaze sharp enough to peel you open. She doesn’t speak, doesn’t move, just studies you with a slow, deliberate curiosity that freezes you in place. Your stomach twists. Why you? Why tonight? Why this invitation? This attention? You force your feet forward, every step feeling like you’re walking deeper into someone else’s story, one you haven’t been told the ending of. Gortash watches your approach and when you stop in front of him, he smiles, warm, familiar, unnerving in his certainty. “Ah! Tav, dear!” Your pulse stutters. Before you can answer, the faintest shift of air brushes the back of your neck — someone behind you. Someone who moved without a sound. You didn’t see her leave Gortash’s side. You didn’t hear her cross the floor. You never even felt her approach. But you feel her now. And you feel the dagger at your back. Her voice curves around your ear in a low, delighted whisper, like velvet across your skin; a hunter about to devour her prey. “We’re going to have so much fun tonight.”

Ragged breaths filled the chamber, harsh, uneven, echoing off metal and glass. A low growl answered, wet and guttural, vibrating through the floor like something testing the air between each exhale. Water dripped in slow, rhythmic taps, the only steady sound in a space otherwise ruled by panting, scraping claws, and the thud wood in a steady but frantic rhythm. Unnh...fuck...so big… The projection screen crackled to life. Perfect timing. The static cleared just in time for Gortash’s face to appear, immaculate as ever, framed in that soft blue mechanical glow, only for his expression to halt pre-sentence as he took in the scene: Clandestine. Pinned to a crate. Hair a mess. Legs open. A sahuagin over her. Gortash blinked once. Then his mouth curled. “I did warn you not to come down here… didn’t I?” Her eyes dragged toward the screen in a slow, exhausted roll, lids heavy as if even looking at him required effort she did not currently possess. His gaze dipped, taking in the creature, the crate, the whole disaster they’d made of his reactor chamber. “Got in a bit over your head, did you, dear?” He let the words roll out with a velvet sort of mockery, equal parts entertained and exasperated, like he’d been expecting her to ignore his warning and was almost pleased she’d proven him right. A common occurrence between them. She gasped out, struggling against the creature but finding no leverage. Her hips bucking involuntarily with each thrust, the pleasure-pain overwhelming as she clawed at the trident prongs around her neck. “Try not to die. It would be terribly inconvenient.” His image stuttered, blue light guttering out in a blink; one second he was there, infuriatingly calm, and the next she was staring at a dead, silent screen. Bastard. Her last coherent thought as the Sahuagin growled over her, hoisting one leg up into the air with ease to spread her wide open and began a jackhammer pace into both of her squeezing, slick holes.

The vault’s echo still rang in their ears, a phantom of clattering chains and shouted wards. Now there was only the cave, breath, heartbeats, and frost. The stolen crown gleamed in Clandestine’s hand, its fuchsia gems pulsing faintly like a living heart. She turned it slowly, power always looked alluring to her; terrible, and magnificent at the same time. She could feel Gortash watching her, the weight of his gaze as familiar as her own shadow. “Beautiful,” she mused, not sure whether she meant the crown, the victory, or the power crackling between them. “Yes,” he said beside her, quiet but sure. “ You are.” Watching her, flushed with triumph, alive with the fire of success, he’d felt a familiar hunger for her sharpen into certainty. Years of lingering glances, and unsaid words, all crashing into this one admission that cut deeper than the cold. Her focus slipped as she turned to him; wide-eyed, pulse hammering. The flame in her hand faltered, flared once, then vanished with a stream of smoke as she closed her fist. She could not, would not risk a magic surge, not now… not when they’d won. She’d imagined this moment a thousand times, in a thousand ways, each thought buried beneath duty, and loyalty to her Father. But now, with his voice still hanging in the frozen air, all the careful walls inside her crumbled. Their eyes met, and the world seemed to narrow, and for a moment, nothing on Toril existed but them. For once, neither of them thought of plans or gods or crowns. The tension snapped. She moved first, no more hesitation, no words, just a rush of breath, and heat, and the kind of recklessness that had always bound them together. When their lips met, it was fierce, and sudden, the culmination of every ‘almost’ that had come before. The crown slipped from her fingers as she grabbed him, landing softly on the frost below while the cave filled with the sound of their ragged breaths, and the rustle of fabric and leather as hands found their way beneath.
