Interesting how Smyth & Strauss paint specific pictures with music (shipwrecks! death! transcendence!) while Brahms creates pure musical architecture. Both approaches work - sometimes you want a story, sometimes you want to swim in pure sound.

How differently do #EthelSmyth, #RichardStrauss and #JohannesBrahms use the orchestra. Bold, dramatic, innovative, colourful, rich and architectural. Which adjective would you use for each work?

Brahms Symphony No. 4: the ultimate "mic drop" moment in classical music. After this, he never wrote another symphony. That passacaglia finale strikes deeply every time. Anyone else have pieces that feel like the composer's definitive statement? linktr.ee/CrosbySymphOrch

The beautiful thing about "The Brahms Connection"? It's about how great artists learn from each other. Smyth studied German tradition, Strauss admired Brahms's craft, & Brahms influenced both. Who influenced your favourite artist?

The amazing thing about Death and Transfiguration? Strauss plants the "transfiguration" theme early in the piece, but you only recognise it at the end when it blazes forth in full glory. Like life - you don't always see where you're heading until you arrive.

#RichardStrauss could make an orchestra tell stories that would make filmmakers jealous. "Death and Transfiguration" follows someone's final moments and spiritual journey - all through music alone. The guy was 25 when he wrote this! 🤯 What's the most emotionally powerful piece of music you know?

The Wreckers Overture tells a tragic story in 10 turbulent minutes; Cornish villagers, shipwrecks, forbidden love and moral choices. Come and hear us play this rarely performed work by #EthelSmyth on 16th November 2025. Linktr.ee/CrosbySymphOrch #classicalmusic

Today's composer spotlight: Ethel Smyth! Composed operas, got arrested for suffragette activities, and was absolutely fearless in her music. Her Wreckers Overture opens our Brahms Connection concert. Question: why don't we hear more of her music in concert halls today?

🎼 Here's something special coming your way: "The Brahms Connection" - ever wondered how great composers influenced each other? This programme tells that story through Smyth's dramatic overture, Strauss's tone-poem masterpiece, and Brahms's final symphony. What's your favourite Brahms work?
