If it's the art you're worried about, don't forget that in the early 2000s, there were a number of very popular sprite-based comics. Not saying they didn't take artistic talent and time, but I wouldn't call it highly detailed art, either.
As for story, there are folks who will be drawn in!

I enjoyed it. It's a pretty standard open-world adventure game. Only got 12 hours in, though, as something distracted me and it wasn't compelling enough to get back to.
