This key snow depth monitoring setup was led by Prankur Sharma, Gopika Das K, and Pawan Singh under the supervision of Saurabh Vijay from IIT Roorkee , as well as a local citizen scientist -Illiyas bhai-who is responsible for managing and updating the team on regular basis.

A follow-up field campaign will collect snow density and snow water equivalent at both sites, extending observations and enabling:
✔️ Calibration and validation of satellite-based SAR snow depth estimates
✔️ A foundation for scaling monitoring efforts across the Himalaya’s high-altitude regions

In August 2025, CryoSCOPE partners in India installed two time-lapse camera systems above 3300 m a.s.l. in Ladakh to track snow depth at sub-daily scales. Each system records at 1-hour intervals.

Locations:
🔹 Outwash region of the Chalong catchment
🔹 Panikhar Village

The session featured 9 presentations, covering diverse topics

-Global estimates of snow sublimation
-Snow sublimation in the Swiss Alps using isotopes & eddy covariance
-Impact of light-absorbing particles on Himalayan snowmelt
-Modelling subglacial & groundwater flow in Svalbard

CryoSCOPE at IMC 2025!

We presented a session on “Integrating cryosphere–atmosphere–hydrosphere dynamics: from process-level insights to large-scale modelling”, convened by Harsh Beria and co-convened by Mathieu Gravey, Marius G. Floriancic, Shaakir Shabir Dar and Rakesh K Hooda.

India’s glaciers are melting fast, yet critical data to track the change is missing.

CryoSCOPE is filling that gap with field measurements and monitoring in the Himalayas.

CryoSCOPE is ensuring glacier change is measured and understood for timely action.

Urgent action, bold innovation: The race to rescue India’s disappearing glaciers
Glaciers across the world are witnessing unprecedented change as the planet becomes warmer and temperatures continue to climb under the influence of human-induced climate change.

Meltwater from glaciers and snow effects global ecosystems.
Within CryoSCOPE we aim to understand how much water will be available for irrigation and plant-water use across the various ecosystems of the Alps, the Himalayas and the Arctics.

2025 = Big year for ice! ❄️
It’s the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation and the start of the UN Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences.

At CryoSCOPE, we’re on it:
🔬 Tracking glaciers, snow & permafrost
🌐 Linking Alps, Himalayas & Arctic research

🧊 Data-driven science!
CryoSCOPE uses satellite data and field measurements, integrating these into physically-based and AI-driven numerical models to quantify changes in snow, ice and permafrost. Stay tuned for updates from Europe to South Asia!

🌍 Why CryoSCOPE?

🔁 Everything is connected. CryoSCOPE studies how the Cryosphere, Atmosphere & Hydrosphere (CAH) interact: assessing how snow and ice shape water flows to better predict climate change impacts in fragile cold regions.
cryoscope.bsky.social
From the Alps to the Himalayas and the Arctic, our fieldwork spans some of the planet’s most sensitive mountain and polar regions. Stay tuned as we uncover critical insights for the future of water and ecosystems.

❄️ Meet CryoSCOPE!

A 4-year EU-funded research project uniting 19 partners across 8 countries to better understand snow, glacier and permafrost processes - how they respond to climate change, and how these shifts affect downstream hydrological and biogeochemical cycles.

A beautiful day in the Dischma valley, most of the snow has melted out, and river discharge has increased. How much of the snowmelt signal can we still trace in the stream?
