Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, born today 1837.

He was the leader of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, the second African-American Union military regiment. They fought at the battle of Fort Wagner on Morris Island, S.C. in 1863. Most of the members died in the assault and were buried in a mass grave.
