I don’t think I understand the stickiness on this point, and in the future I really strongly encourage you to talk to the folks you reference in advance when using them as source material. your argument could function fine without the meme :)

I have massive respect for you posting the essay, it’s well written, and I agree with many of your points… There is a huge difference between a meme at large or art piece and a small meme used by an insular community whose originators you share a community with!
