Just as the Karankawa and Akokisa tribes evolved with their environment, so did local wildlife, like the two distinct bottlenose dolphin ecotypes found in the Gulf, the coastal and offshore species. For centuries, our coast has been a hub for fisheries, recreation, shipping, and more!

The Port of Galveston celebrates 200 years this week! Long before bridges and boats connected the island to the mainland, two Indigenous tribes. The Karankawa and the Akokisa called this region home. Adapting to geographic isolation; they fished, hunted, and foraged across our coastal estuaries.

🌕 You know the moon is full when it rises at the same time that the sun sets. The Harvest Moon — the first full moon after the Fall equinox — lit up the Gulf with a golden glow this week. Its powerful pull stirs tides and brings marine life closer to shore, drawing local shrimpers in!

As kids head back to school, the sky and sea are full of lessons.
The Perseids lit up our nights, brown shrimp are returning to Gulf estuaries, and soon the Flower Garden Banks will bloom with a mass coral spawning—nature’s own classroom in session. Here’s to a year of curiosity and wonder!
