Amazing time at our 3rd away day with our fantastic team (minus a few!). We celebrated our wins over the past year, reflected on our leadership styles, and fine-tuned our pitching skills to take us through 2025. Exciting to see how far we've come and looking forward to what’s ahead! 🚀

Excited to share a blog I wrote for MSCAN about my recent research!

📝 Understanding personal melanoma risk could transform prevention & early detection—but how do we communicate it [email protected]

Melanoma personal risk
If you could combine all your risk factors - your genetics, lifestyle, and family history - into a single score that tells you your risk of melanoma, would you want to know?

I’ve had the privilege of running this community initiative, and it’s been incredible! 🏃‍♂️💙 An early morning run club open to all, where we move together and finish with recovery—saunas & ice baths. 🌅❄️🔥 I hope to always balance my life with work, play, and connection ☺️ #RiseRunRevive

Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out.

Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation.

Say equity, which a just society should pursue.

Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.

Finally, end your story with the beginning. Draw it back to the context, the problem and the metaphor. Be sure to talk about future research directions and what issues still remain to be solved.

When you review your findings, first, reiterate the problem you are trying to address & how your findings can be applied. Now when you tell me your findings, my mind is already following your map and making connections about what the findings mean in the real world!

Engage with your audience. Although you don't always need to do this, it sure helps keep my attention if you ask me questions. Even a rhetorical question is good, because it gets people actively thinking!

Remember that metaphor you used earlier? When you "drew a map for my mind"? We're midway through & I need you to remind me of that metaphor & how it relates to what you are talking about now. You the - presenter - are my compass, make sure I'm still on route!

Don't use acronyms or jargon unless you explain them. Or if you can avoid them altogether, that's even better! You know your field, but I'm completely lost if I don't understand the language....

See all those dot points & words on your slide? DELETE THEM. I'll be real with you. I'm not reading your slide, especially if you are speaking at the same time. And YOU shouldn't be reading off your slide either - it defeats the point of you being present! Pictures and memes never go astray 😜

In a few quick lines, tell me the CONTEXT and tell me the PROBLEM. In other words, What's the issue and why is it important? If you convince me that it's important, I'll invest more attention and interest!

Use a metaphor - or some examples everyone can relate to. Your research may be in a very specific niche, but thar's exactly why you need to put it in terms that I can understand! i.e. It's like drawing a map for my mind so I can follow along...
