Trials are essential, but there's a tension between encouraging participants for the sake of future patients and implying that 'early diagnosis is obviously good for the individual'. The latter implication is seen in non-specialist media, but researchers looking for funding might be tempted.

Indeed. There's rarely any discussion of the disadvantages to the individual of early diagnosis. On a population level the main advantage is the ability to run treatment trials.
