It’s Erik Ahlsén’s birthday today, so let’s talk about this documentary on SVT Play featuring the Ahlsén brothers. Episode 1 of Arkitekter berättar: Vad gör egentligen en arkitekt? 🍰🥫

As a follow-up, episode 2 of the series somehow doesn’t exist but episode 3 (Att se in i framtiden - looking into the future) has Leif Reinius of Backström & Reinius talking about their work, here Vällingby:

I really loved watching this. It’s not often you see architects in the realities they built reflecting on their afterlives. I was also glad I nailed their character notes, though the intensity of their extrovert/introvert dynamic surprised and amused me. See it here: www.svtplay.se/video/8pXR5p...

Some more of this garden courtyard thing. Less greenwashing and more of this please. 🫖

And from without, the Ahlséns walking through a windy garden 🌬️

We are now in Örebro, some lush interiors and materials:

Returning to the titular question of “what does an architect actually do”, Erik gives an impassioned speech about how above all we must build for people. Not states, or cities, or departments, but people. An architect must also be a revolutionary. By the end of this segment, he was my hero.

Ahlsén office aesthetic, with boys hard at work ✍️📐

Between the two of them Erik does 90% of the talking. Tore mostly listens and occasionally interjects ”ja just det”. But he gets his own segment at Henriksdalsberget, and he recites a poem he wrote (titled “From my balcony”), though I get the impression that he’d rather let Erik do all the talking!

It seemed like a happy memory for them too as Erik talked about painting the mural. As they wandered around, I wondered if any passersby knew the order of their everyday was once an ideal in the hearts of these men.

They head into the library and chat to the librarian about how it is used today (read: 1976). 📚 Both were well pleased with how things have turned out in their sweet little town centre. Lots of smiles going around.

Besides pondering the titular question, the brothers revisit a few of their projects and discuss the designs, as well as how they have aged since completion. Naturally, we begin in Årsta, looking dreamy and beautiful on washed out film:

A long time ago I did one for my British repertoire, which might have also said a lot about me

A few debuts in this chart actually. I’ll let you work out who’s who

My Swedish repertoire is now large enough to do this! This might say a lot about me

Asked the parish if they have regular hours and the answer was no… but I was actively encouraged to attend a church activity and hang out with them to see the building. That’s a first. Erling why is it so hard to see you, Regjeringskvartalet isn’t finished either… my H-block and Picasso 😞

Well, yes. And exploring the likes of MK Gallery and Harlow’s amazing public sculpture strikes me as a swift and imaginative way to the heart. Is Rodin not romantic? Is Frink not a kindler of frisson? Far better than many more clichéd options.

I also find it hilarious when they are referred to as ‘stockholmsarkitekterna’. You look at their backstories and tell me how that’s even remotely true. Post-KTH/KKH sure maybe but come on! Let’s have some regional representation?

Waist-deep in Wejke & Ödeen lore right now reading about BB45, so can I offer you their bios and gorgeous photos in 1955! 🏡

I would like to report this is no longer the case. One of the Sweden round two outcomes was obtaining the holy grail. And it was less than 2000kr! 🕊️ Now, just the bostadskatalog to go…

The more I look, the more I realise how much stuff they actually built. Apart from the Swedish architect trope of doing either a church or a cemetery, they did everything else! And they were so good! Truly the biggest sleeper hit of 20thC Swedish architectural history

It is unreal that everyone seems to be baffled by the fact that I like Wejke & Ödeen. Guys you’re missing out… 🙂‍↔️ As (possibly) the biggest W&Ö fan in existence right now, I offer you the W&Ö bingo, or how to identify a W&Ö building in the wild:
