Day 27: Achievement. The repatriation of an ancient Cypriot Black on Red juglet which was put up for sale at a UK auction house - an achievement for all concerned. #Museum30

Day 26: Moving. Merrily we roll along… Small ancient Cypriot warrior in large chariot, Cyprus Museum #Museum30

Day 25: Danger. ‘Danger: Do not operate’. British Steel exhibit at Kirkleatham Museum - part of my own family’s heritage. #Museum30

Day 24: Specialist. Recently I learned that precise dating of pottery repairs is of interest to specialist conservators, allowing them to study developing conservation techniques. So a 1936 letter saying ‘The pottery arrived broken but I have mended it’ is of more than historical interest! #Museum30

Opened a box I don’t think I’ve unpacked since university. That is… going back a bit.

Day 23: Animal. I love zoomorphic ancient Cypriot ceramics, half way between pot and animal - this one from the Cyprus Museum, Nicosia #Museum30

Day 22: Walk. An ancient Cypriot Black on Red jug from New Walk Museum, Leicester #Museum30

Day 21: Careers. Thinking today of Violet Crowther (1884-1969), daughter of Henry Crowther, museum curator in Leeds. She and her sisters Virté and Vera 'helped' Crowther considerably in his museum work, and Violet ran the Abbey House Museum but was never promoted above Assistant Curator 🤔 #Museum30

Day 20: Diary. Sometimes a diary entry can shed new light on collection histories. The diary of William Aldam (1813-1890) for 28 Sept 1870 reveals that he paid for the Cypriot amphora donated by him to the Museum of the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society, but didn't choose or own it. #Museum30

Day 19: Magic. In her book 'Deaccessioning Museum Objects', @durrantjenny.bsky.social describes the 'magic moment' when a visitor connects with a museum object. Much of my work is about this 'magic moment', facilitating object encounters, meeting them myself, and trying to capture them in writing.

Day 18: Photograph. Sometimes photographs bring out details more clearly, such as this amphora handle stamp, ΚΛΕΑΡΧΟΥ ΝΑΜΟΥ, identifying its place and period of production #Museum30

Leeds City Museum really needs to realize that everyone’s pantomime wolf deserves his own fridge magnet. Had to make do with turning a postcard into a fridger

Day 17: Making. It has to be the fabulous Museum of Making in Derby, where you can choose your own adventure through the collections #Museum30

Day 16: Last 12 months. Some museum highlights: meeting Mr Darcy at Bankfield; the #MuseumsAssociation conference at the Royal Armouries; Hat Works Museum, Stockport; and Tullie House Museum, Carlisle. #Museum30

Day 15: Kindness. Some of my museum mapping work involves retracing the steps of previous generations of researchers, and like them I am hugely grateful for the kindness of curators in sharing information and access to collections #Museum30

Day 14: Heavy. Weight, bulk, heft are important aspects of the materiality of ancient objects, and hard to convey visually or through text. This Red Polished bowl is surprisingly heavy in the hand, like a full mug of tea, and it rests centred and self-contained despite its rounded base. #Museum30

There it is - 'A History of England in 25 Poems' by @cathamclarke.bsky.social featured in Blackwell's roundup of the Best History Books of 2025. Just in time for Christmas shopping!

Day 13: Background. Stunning animated background for ancient Mediterranean objects at The Burrell Collection #Museum30

Day 12: Digital. The ‘digital turn’ has made possible new kinds of research into museum history - not least tracing objects through digitised historical auction catalogues #Museum30

Day 11: Reflection. I really liked the ‘reflection space’ included in the wonderful ‘Living with Death’ exhibition at Leeds City Museum #Museum30

This is wonderful work, and I can't wait to read the thesis.
Congratulations to Alison Hadfield who has successfully defended her #PhD thesis “In Touch with the Past: A Sensory Approach to Objects, Memory and Wellbeing”.

Day 30: Rainbow. Rainbow quartz on display at The Amelia, Tunbridge Wells; and a double rainbow taken through a rain-splashed window. #Museum30

Day 9: Map. For my book project I’m mapping museums in the UK which have ancient Cypriot collections. There are more than you might think! #Museum30
