Our GOW1 experience was especially bad as it wasn’t only the least inspired of the three, the game ran so poorly and inconsistently that it was an effort just to finish it. Maybe our run was a fluke but on average the game ran at under 30 FPS, worse in cutscenes

I’m not saying that GOW is bad because it isn’t like RE5, the gold standard of co-op action games. I’m saying that RE5 has creative and inventive (and most of all fun) moments that make full use of co-op gameplay and Gears 1-3 has “split up from your partner for 2 minutes and try not to die”

Watching the series fine tune its gameplay loop with each new title was fascinating. After 1 we said “they have the foundation for a great co-op game here” and then said the same after 2 & 3. By the end, it finally hit the point of dumb fun but they never figured out co-op gameplay on par with RE5

Playing the entire trilogy couch co-op was fun but in a “misery loves company” way. Great discussion and laughing at the games’ poor performance and absurdity of the world and dialogue, but we both agreed that the series finally found itself in the last mission of 3. Horde Mode is cool too.
