Die Aufnahme ist ein dynamisches Makrofoto, das einen Kolibrischwärmer (Macroglossum stellatarum) im Flug über einem Büschel kleiner violetter Blüten einfängt.
Im Zentrum des unteren Bildbereichs dominiert ein kompakter, halbkugelförmiger Blütenstand, wahrscheinlich Eisenkraut (Verbena), der aus zahlreichen winzigen, leuchtend violett-rosa Blüten besteht.
Darüber, in der Luft, schwebt der Kolibrischwärmer. Er ist in Bewegung, was durch die leichte Unschärfe seiner schnell schlagenden Flügel angedeutet wird. Seine Flügel haben ein marmoriertes Muster in Grau- und Brauntönen, wobei die Hinterflügel einen Schimmer von Orange durchscheinen lassen. Der Körper ist pelzig und weist eine markante, schwarz-weiße, kontrastreiche Zeichnung am Hinterleibsende auf. Der lange, dünne Rüssel ist deutlich sichtbar, eingerollt oder bereit zum Nektarsaugen.
Der Hintergrund ist unscharf (Bokeh), wodurch das Motiv scharf hervorgehoben wird. Er besteht aus verschwommenen Flecken in sanften Blau- und Grautönen, durchsetzt mit großen, leuchtend gelb-orangenen Unschärfekreisen, die wahrscheinlich von anderen Blumen in der Ferne stammen.
Die Komposition ist ausgewogen und fängt den Moment der Bewegung und des Innehaltens des Schwärmers auf der Suche nach Nektar ein.
