Early D&D combat wasn’t loose or arbitrary.
It was procedural.
It wasn't about realism or grind, but helping to manage risk, reduce uncertainty, & telegraph danger to players.

ONE of my favorites (it depends on my mood, what I'm eating, what ingredients I have) is something I made up called "The Little Tree" (after Charlie Brown):
