🆕 The discovery of new complex organic molecules at Saturn's #Enceladus enhances the likelihood that the moon is habitable 🪐

On Earth, these molecules are involved in chemical reaction chains that lead to the more complex molecules essential for life.

Scientific illustration showing a cross-section of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. It features three labelled layers: An ice shell at the top, with visible cracks releasing jets of water vapour into space; an ocean in the middle, depicted as a large body of water beneath the ice; a rocky core at the bottom, shown emitting heat that may drive the jets. In the background, Saturn and its rings are visible in space.

oh btw a new jwst image dropped today and it’s absolutely breathtaking
Gaseous yellow-orange filaments look like a rose seen from the side and tilted slightly from upper left to lower right, slightly higher than the center of the frame. Extending from the rose to upper left and lower right are gaseous outflows that appear as red lobes that have an overall shape of tall, narrow triangles with rounded tips. Each red triangle is made up of wavy, irregular lines. Dozens of stars are scattered across the field. One particularly bright white star with eight diffraction spikes is located at the top of the yellow rose. Another bright blue star with even more prominent diffraction spikes is to its lower left. The background of space is black.

Excited to share this white paper I co-authored, submitted to NASA-DARES 2025, on the societal and scientific challenges of SETI post-detection 📡

Proud moment!
The Hub was given a shout out by the Natural History Museum of London in their "Could Life Exist Beyond Earth" exhibition 👽

We (The Hub) have made it as part of an exhibit at the Natural History Museum "Could Life Exist Beyond Earth" - exhibition display just seen by one of my colleagues at the SETI Post-Detection Hub . The word is spreading. 👽

this is a galaxy cluster located almost 3 BILLION light years away.

we can even see the light curving from galaxies behind it!!! 🌌
A cluster of distant, mainly elliptical galaxies. They appear as brightly shining points radiating golden light that each take the shape of a smooth, featureless oval. They crowd around one that is extremely large and bright. A few spiral galaxies of comparable size appear too, bluer in color and with unique shapes. Of the other more small and distant galaxies covering the scene, a few are warped into long lines.

One of the best workshops I’ve ever attended!

Just back from an incredibly interesting and enjoyable weekend at St Andrews (Scotland), where we held our first Workshop for the SETI Post Detection Hub, at the University. Not one PowerPoint slide in evidence and all the better for it - we actually interacted and debated topics. More to come ..

Episode 7 of The Blind Spot Podcast. @evanthompson.bsky.social and I do a deep dive into why science needs to rethink its approach to life.

And we also talk about Evan’s epic adolescence (seriously, it was epic).
